March 1 - The first ~ International Six Days Trials qualIf1ca:c: tions round held here today gave ISDT tz:I hopefuls a preview of what lies ahead ...) for them in Europe. ~ The 120-mile enduro type run was preU sented by the Prospectors MCand cover.. ed a variety of terrain. It was a pointto-poind race against time, with riders encountering rain, snow, cold wins, and mud. Also included were three special events allowing riders to earn bonus points for gold, sUver, and bronze medals simllar to the ISDT. This event, along with the Berkshire Trials scheduled in My and last year's Jaekpine Enduro, will help determlne the official U.S. team entering the ISDT tbls year. , .r Gary Conrad came out of semi retirement to field a Husk)'. Starting in the Prospectors' event were 85 top riders, mostly from SoutherCalifornia. International exceptions were Werner Salersky from East Germany and Englishman Malcolm Smith. Claes NU- son and Lars Larsson, two Swedish riders who now work and live in California, were also entered• . . Salersky, incidentally, is over here for the M-Z factory and is working with M- Z distributor Mike Patrick. Together they are determlnlng what changes might be necessary for marketing the M- Z .. Cross-country" model in Southern California. The Who's Who list of California riders was led off at 8a.m, by ISDT veteran Dave Ekins, aptly bearing plate number one. Riders were sent off in the rain at one minute intervals after starting their engines cold. The start/finish point was Cinco Station (Tokiwas), 15 miles north of the desert town of Mojave. The long first loop began through Lone Tree Canyon and included the first special event, a downhlll section. Then, after going through the first check, riders made their way to Jawbone Canyon for the second event, a modified hlllcllmb. Then on into Red Rock Canyon for gas. After passing under the bridge at Red Rock, riders went into the lron Canyon area where they encountered rain, cold winds, and snow. Here also in lron Canyon was a unique obstacle caillng for quick thinking on the part of a few of the later riders. It seems some old gal, apparently descended from Calamity Jane, emerged from her obscure mining shack and began brandishing a shotgun at some of the riders. She insisted they got off'n her dad-blamed property and don't bother her no more. There were a few hasty yes ma'msl and the heinous trespassers pushed on in an inspired manner. At Last Chance Canyon, those arrivIng early had a chance. to warm their hands at the fire, grab a candybar, and fuel up again. Lars Larsson had to put paid to his efforts at tbls point because of mounting clutch and carburetor ailments with his 400cc ~co. The Jawa Gelandesport (250-350-402cc) is the real thing, hand-built for the uncommon man who demands the very best. It is not pretty and It is not cheap. It is a winner. A Gelandesport can be lugged unmercifully and yet wUl not stall (if it had 2 more wheels you might mistake It for a tractor!) . Yet the very same motorcycle easUy breezes over 100 mUes per hour on the top end: The crankshaft and gearbox in a Gelandesport can each be removed separately without taking theengfne from the frame. There are 2 completely separate ignition systems in a Gelandesport, just so you won't be stuck out in the hinterlands in case of a mishap, Last but not least, you are furnished with a complete 6- Days spares kit with each Gelandesport (spokes, sprockets, condenser, POints, plugs, cables, light bulbs, cba1n llnks, nuts & bolts, tire tools, compressed a1r bottle....) .
