Set Up Your Yamaha For Trials By Bill Brokaw Highly sophisticated Tr1a1s motorcycles are getting more common and easier to buy. These out-of-the-box cycles leave nothing to desire, unless a person has a desire to own a competitive machine that 15 not just another production model. Mark Mllck of Colorado Springs 15 one of these. He bought a 175 Yamaha Enduro because of Its versaWe on the road, off the road features. Becoming more interested in Trials he decided against buying a production Trials Iron and he went to work on his bike with some help from Bill 3rokaw, his dealer. The bike 15 not yet completed. Plans are to buUd a different exhaust system and oU tank that w1l1 slim the bike for leg clearance. To date the mod1f1catlons and set uP are these: The front loop 15 a 3.00 x 2l ' ~ Metzler knobby. An alloy fork brace for more positive steering. A raised plastic front fender • Handlebars are scrambler type that have been rebent to provide a flatter grip angle. Fork stops were ground down to allow the greatest turning without the forks strikIng the gas tank. A small solo saddle was fitted. Rear tire 15 a 4.00 X IS" Dunlop Trials. internal gearing was changed by fitting the low gear set from Yamahas close ratio racing gear set. This brought low gear closer to second. Final drive 15 a 12/55 sprocket combination. Footrests were buIlt using Bates competition folding weld-on units. The right side peg was brought in line with the swing arm pivot and the broke peda1 was shortened on both the pedal and lever ends. This maintained approximately ortg1nal leverage. The left side footrest 15 mounted approximately 3" to the rear of the right side peg. The gear lever was then shortened and reverse. This staggered arrangement of the footrests enables the rider to balance his body on the machine' without - tugging on the handlebars. The torque cbaracteristics of the Yamaha l75cc engine are very good. The bike 15 impressive to ride and there 15 little doubt that it w1l1 be a trophy getter. 1970 Beris'lire In".
