..... Ice R acing: Colorado Winter Sport ~ Report& Photos by Annie Brokaw RAINBOW FALLS PARK, COLO. Feb. 15, 1970 - It was a beautiful day for Ice races put on by the Dusters M.C . of Color ado Springs. Rainbow Falls, located about 30 mUes northwest of Colorado Springs In the great Rocky Mountains, was the ' scene of the second lee race of the winter for the Dusters. Rain bow Falls Is a flshlng retreat for the fishermen and has 3 well stocked small fresh water lakes. Picnic tables and beautiful scenery makes a super place for a motorcycle Ice race. The bikes have . no studs or chain s on the tires, but the Ice Is sanded or graveled for traction. It makes for a real fun show and quite a change from motocross, TT' s etc . A " third wheel" class Is run which Is simply an extra wheel put on the side In an outrigger fashion . No passenger however. Bruce Sass (Hodaka) won the 125 class with Bill Conlon (Yamaha) a close second. Bruce really goes, won his class In the motocross last week and has Just been advanced to A class after only five races. Bill Brokaw (Yamaha) had an easy win by a quarter lap In the 250 class. Mike Willett got a hard fought for second on his Yamaha . Bill looked so smooth, It didn' t seem like he was going fast enough to win. The Open class saw the back of Ralph Br unIng on his Malco and then Phil La tham on his Triumph for a first and second. The third wheel class was a real hard fought race for flrst . Dave Carriker (AJS) came out the winner and Bernard Burdett (Gr eeves) a r eal close s econd. They look like they would be so much fun to r ide . A consola tion race was hel d for all the non- winners and MerlYn Plumlee (BSA) won but had to keep tickli ng the carburetor In the corner s to keep It runnt ng, The Duster s hope to have another Ice r ace the same place on March 15th.
