]N Wins Little Bear On When the leaders fln1shed the first loop in a Uttle less than one hour, Rick LUCERNE, CAL. Feb. 22,1970-Switching from a Swedish Husky to a thumping English four-stroke single, J.N. Roberts once again proved his desert superiority and won the Little Bear Hare Scrambles on a Rickman Westlake. The smoke bomb was four and a half miles out, over one of the choppiest starting areas we have had in sometime. The riders came from all sides as everyone was trying to find their own trall and stay out of the dust. As they headed toward the first of two fortymile loops Duffy Hambleton on a Husky, . was first. Rickey Shirey was second on a Bultaco, J.N. Roberts was running tenth on the Rickman with the Westlake thumper. Thorwaldson had the lead on his Bultaco with Roberts close behind. The first loop was rough but now with the trall worn in it would really be dusty and choppy. It takes a lot of team war k to make it big in desert racing. The first need Is a good rider, then a good machlne with a very good tuner, and lots of luck becuase those flat tires can get to anyone. Also, a good pit Is a necessity. The second loop took Its toll of riders but Roberts was up to the task at hand and came in for the win. Thorwaldson had a flat and dropped out. WhItey Martino #1 came in second, followed by Steve Kirk #2 on a Montesa and Howard Utsey #14 on a CZ. Phil Bowers was the first c, Rick Shirey rode his Bul 10 eighth overall. Wes Anderson Jr. took first 250Amateur again for five out of six tries. Eric Jensen added another 125cc win to his long Ust, Sachs mounted. Frank Russo took first Amateur 500 on a Tracy's twied Huksy. Larry Sovern looked llke the top Novice on a 250cc Yamaha, f1n1shing about thirty-second overall at the finish line he was really tired. "This was a dusty one, I had to move off the trall a lot to pass guys because it couldn't see a thing on the maln trall," Pete Roberts was the first 500 Novice on a Husky. The 100cc class started fifteen minutes after the big bikes, they all hit the smoke. at one time. from all sides and it . was hard to tell who had the lead, but there was no mistaking the leader coming into the pits, it was Terry Clark on a Hodaka. He was Just pull1ng out as Jack Morgan, also on a Hodaka, went by heading for his pits. They had a good lead on the balance of the pack. Clark and Morgan were having at it on the second loop, Morgan was able to pass Clark by going off the t:ra11 and getting with it in the boondocks. It was right after being passed that Clark got a flat tire which put a end to a hot duel. Morgan came in for the win and Clark took second. Jim Sumners . was third, followed by Cortis Brooks. All four were Hodaka mounted. Doug Winchlll took first Novice on a Kawasaki followed by Jerry Hlll ta.k1ng second Novice on a Hodaka.
