SHAMROCKS MAKE IT IN CARLSBAD MUD By David Smead CARLSBAD, CALIF . Feb . 8,1970- The Shamrocks sponsored another exciting Motocross at Car ls bad Raceway Fe b. Bth, The racing started early on a cold, wet course and although the day warmed quickly the course stayed wet. One of the muddie st Motocross races to be planned In So. Calif. got even muddler as the day went on. The Sbamrocks laid out a most difficult course on top of the mud, Including some off-camber hill turns that slowed even the best riders down. There were three divi sions of the 125 Novices and 250 Novices. Each ran two M otes, In the 125 Novice Terry Memdel (Yam), Dean York (Sac), and Lee Conklin won their divisions for first place The three 250 Novice divisions wer e won by Rick Blom (Yam), Cal Sukut (Yam) and Dean York (CZ). Larry Watkins (Mal) won the 500 Open Novice and Jim Wilson took the 500 Open on his Gr eeves. Words are a poor tool to explain what Jim Wilson can do to a Greeves and any ground In the way. He won the 250 and 500 Expert classes without ever being challenged. The series will run for six months and will consist of twelve races with the riders' best ten scores counting for the championship. The races will be held at Motor -Sport Park In Fort Worth and at Austin Moto- Cross Park In Austin. There will be one Championship even t at each of these tracks every month. Championship points will be awarded to Senior r iders ' only, At the conclusion of the 1970 series the Texas Sta te Champi ons In the 125, 250, and Open classes will be named, and will be designated to carry the number (1) on their number plates for the year . All riders competing In the ser ies will be assigned a racing number corresponding ' to their finishing positions In the series. The State Champs will receive an expense jlai.d. triP .to Califor nia to r epr esent Texas at the final event of the 1970 Inter-Am races. Monthly bull etins will be distributed giving the standings.
