Feb. 6, 1970 - on the cold rainy winter afternoon of Jan. 25th, 1970, Dennis Fromm made his bid for power and got It in the th1rd lap of the 100cc semi. He was leading the pack going Into the right hand swltcb back corner wben be over rode himself a Uttle and spun out. On hands and knees be scrambled frantically for the edge of the track. Wham! somethlng hit his left sboulder, went across his neck and over his bead. He was out like a Iight, A rider behind him had not been able to stop and was forced to run him over. QuIckly the ambulance rolled out to the track and sized up the accident as a possible broken .neck. Dennis was carefully placed on a special board and sand bagged around his head and neck, so be could not move until examined at the hospital. The ambulance got him to the hospital In record time and the driver .s tayed there unW he found out that Dennis had a sllgbt concussion and a few bumps and bruises. but no broken bones. ~ Not bad lor I.ss than a year. and a hall 01 racing. Hls only comment about his accident was " Thank God for the good old Bellstar," as he sbowed the tire marks acorss the helmet. ThIs was the first close call Dennis has had In the year and three months he has been racing. Feb. 8, 1970 - It was a great day for a motocross. The sun had shined for a week, drying out the foothills 1n rain drencbed northern Callfornla, so the course was Ideal . for racing. The Shasta Motorcycle Club of Redding laid the course out just west of Red muff. It was 1-3/4 miles around with some hairy turns, several good jumps and a long fast stralgbtaway to the flnisb l1ne. Three motes, five laps eacb were run. There were four different classes with Experts, Amateurs, and Novtces competlng together. The motos 1n the 100 class were quite exciting with Phil Heyrend and Danny ' Thompkins battling It out for the two top places all the way. The 200 and 250 classes were dominated by Jim Hubbard and Bill Brownell in their respective classes. Charley Thompson moved out In the lead from the start In the Open class and steadilY stretched his lead to the f1nlsb. The next ra:ce will be beld on February 22, 1970., Depending on the weather it will either be a motocross or a mud run. Club officials promised more trophies to the 100 competitors for the next race. They also promised to divide the classes Into more beats. RESULTS: lOOCc Class: Danny Thompkins, PbUUp Heyrend. 250Cc Class: Bill Brownell, Jake Leatherwood, Kenny Norberg. 200Cc Class: Jim HUbbard, Robert Brown. Open Class: Charley Thompson, Don Davis.
