- DAVE B ICKER : Motocros N S s atural ~ '" 0.. *********************** Apple Tree Motocross On The Way By W.H. Spencer WATSONVILLE, CALIF. Feb. 8, 1970As one drives along Route 1 west of Watsonville, in the apple orchard area, one finds the new Apple-tree Motocross cour s e . 'lb1s track Is destined to become one of the most difficult In the area. The terrain leands Itself to the complications of a natural rough track. Fantastic Is the first word I thought of after taking a few short laps. Sandy dirt with right and left variation turns keep one guessing, but they are fast enough to keep one thInkIng.- The first two-thirds of the course are rough. You climb up a slight grade mos t of the tim e, then as It levels off coming around a turn you start a 60 percent downhill run. When you land and get your stomach back another downhill besets you, and you really slow down. This downhill isn't so rough and you climb back on the throWe. When you reach the bottom It's time to start lap two. The CMC North will hold the opening event on March 11, 1970with a Motocross event. It should be an exciting day . Hare Scra.bles 8, Hill An" Gull, M.C. By Jeanne Frlestman WEST RICHLAND, WASH. Feb. 8, 1970Hill & Gully MIC sponsored one of the fastes t Hare Scrambles this area has ever seen. Dirt roads accounted for eighty per cen t of the course, while between were a few stout sage brush and a dry lake bed grown up with lots of skinny trees . A line up of 109 riders In an atmosphere of London fog awaited a noon start. The start was as fast as their pace, with Don McInti r e grabbing the lead on a 250 Matco. Chris Aker blade, (250 Suz.) and Open class Lorne SchoOley (Husky), were a constant threat to McIntire. The trail was narrow and the field of ' men was wide. Dick Poulin, 360 Matco, and Jim Pomeroy, 250 Yam., (two of Dist.22's fastest Moto- X riders) put their bid In too, but both encountered mechanical problems and were forced out. PulIn's son, Rick 250 Matco, was In the upper percentage throughout the race, but was not ranked high enough to trophy. Charli e Keston, another top contender, suffered multiple injuries after taking a ba d spill halfway through the r ace . Unable to fini sh, he,and his bike were helped off the path, but again he was fa ced with misfortune as a wild CZ ironed him out. Seen again on his 01' Bultaco was the area's top 200 class man Dave Fr ie s tman . Holding fir s t for the entire 15 lap requirement, he was sent around for another lap by mis take, only to be passed by Doug Graves, (Yam.), when hi s Bul lost compression just 300 yds . fr om the finish gate. Doug was awarded first and Dave given second. Helmet stickers were used for keep ing track of laps which usually works out well , but this day the felt pens didn't want to dry quickly and often the marks would become smeared. Misled by the theory that the race could be won within the five to ten fee t of the check point if you were quick to move, many of the men found themselves making an extra lap. BILL CHANEY SPECIAL ATTRACTION MOTORCYCLE RACES • Some sportsmen are naturals while some are fashioned , but Dave Bickers, the world champion scrambles titleholde r who will appear in the Inte r national Rothmans Motoc r os s series come's Into the first category as he Is a born motor cyc li s t. From the time he learned to walk, motorcycles became his passion, and an engineless machine was his childhood pride and joy. Dave's first " r eal" machIne, bought with his own money, was a 1928175cc Fr ancis - Barnett and this set him back 5 pounds , He did not ride this machine very often as it was always in the gar- . age ' but Bickers mai ntains that it certainly taught him much about the mechanics of motorcycle. Two years later. at 14 years of age, he purchased a 1928 Model 18 Norton. Bickers claims that he wore a rut In the field where he ' rode It every day after school and It was at this stage that he knew he wanted to be a scrambles rider. At the age of 16 In 1954 the Dot and Bickers had their first outing at a scrambles meeting at Burstall. There he showed his ability from the s tart by winning his heat and finished third In the final. A month later he was granted senior status and from then on showed steady progress unW 1956 when he joined Dot as a works r ider.
