Jan" 27, 1970- More than 300 of the nation's top off-road racers have taken fr ont staring positions in the 3rd Annual Mint" 400" Del Webb Desert Rally scheduled for March 21-24 in the Southern Nevada Desert near Las Vegas. The 400- mUe des er t marathon offers 4- wbee1 racing's largest off-road purse, and the most prize money in motor cycleracing history. This year, guaranteed fir s t- plac e prize money will be $6,000 in each of the race's four divisions, with nearly $10,000 . going to the vehicl e with the faste s t elapsed time. A total of 450 4-wbeeler s and motor cycles are expected to compete thi s year over the rugged 50-mUe desert loop, 15 miles nor th of Las Vegas. Last year, the grueli ng course allowed only 10 percent of 206 entries to finish, ' In the motorcycle div ision, the nation's two top ott-road riders, Preston Petty and Bob Ewing. both of Sepulveda, Callfornia, will be teaming-up with their entry in the pole position. Last year's motorcycle division winner, Mike Patrick, will be in third slot with Triumph, Yamaha, Honda, Bultaco an d othe r producers entering teams . " This yea r's race will be run in three heats," said Race Director Mel Larson. " We' ll race the 4- wbeelers in twin 200m1le heats March 23r d an d 24th, with the motorcycles r unnin g the entire 400 m1les , Sunday, March 21s t." Larson said motorcycles and 4-wbee1ers will be separated this year for safety reasons. " With this year' s pack of 300 cars an d nearly 100 motor cyc les , the cours e will be too crowded and hazardous to include bikers and buggie s in the same race." The four days of racing and festivi ties will begin March 21st with r egistration a t the Mint Hotel race headquarters in . downtown Las Vegas. Highlighting race week will be a Mis s MInt" 400" beauty. pageant, a giant parade through downtown Las Vegas led by Grand Marshall Buddy Hackett, special cocktail parties and an awards and victory banquet at the new Space Center in the Sahara Hotel. Rules and entry forms were mailed from Mint Hotel race headquarters in Las Vegas to drivers and sponsors around the world, Starting positions go to the first 300 4-wbeelers and 100 motorcycles to request entry.
