Payne Wails At Sprocket's Park i . . By Jack L1gbt BAKERSFIELD, CAL. Jan. 25, 1970 _ The 1970 racing season really started today at the newly mod1f1ed Sprocket's Park T.T. course. Over 150racerswere here, many with new numbers and new machines. The perfect weather, the track, and organization, all combined to make this day a huge success. Bakersfield's own Sid Payne is a rider who always "races his own race". Sid plans ahead. knows well what he is going to do. Gene Chandler (33) and Bob Leppek (78) were right on top of Sid, waiting for a mrs-qua or error. to take advantage of - and as usual Sid made no errors or miscalculations. These three Triumph riders had "Rooster Talis" thrown in the air all afternoon - the powerful Triumphs were right at home on this perfect fast track. The 250 Novice class was the crowd pleaser of the day with Its fierce compedtion, Doug Wheeler and his "International Motorcycles" C- Z went r eal well until a twisted knee slowed him down, after winning the moto, had to settle for a third spot behind Dennis Lyons and Jerry Chandler, both Bultaco mounted. This entire class put on a real show. The Open Amateur races were the closest and most exciting of the day, Jim Lynch (51), Roger Davidson (11), Jim O'Hara (41), Triumph, BSA and Bultaco, were as close as "peas in a pod" all looking really sharp, and very fast.
