*********************** SALINAS, CAL . Jan. 18, 1970 - The Salinas Rambl er s M.C. has the most f or midable scrambles track around. In fact, the sandpit is a rough motocross track, except when the Europeans are in town. While the Europeans were not here, the best local talent certainly was. Bob Grossi showed his European training in the 500Cc EXPert class with convincing wins In his heat and the MaIn. It will be the likes of young Grossi who will be America's contribution to motocross racing. His competition came in the Iarge for m of Al Kenyon on a CZ. AI's start was fantastic and except for not being able to kiiep it in ' gear, he could have held off Grossi for the win. AI's problem was due to very deep sand ruts ' which would knock the selector out of position every time he laid It over hard. Both Grossi and Kenyon have that deliberate style that Is rare and absolutely fascinating to watch. The other super The Sandplt Is well named. Sunday. Bob · Grossi showed his championship colors by coming from ' way behind to place second behind the winning Husky of Bill Saltzman. Grossi missed riding the second of three Senior 500 motes entirely. New Junior Steve Darrow, riding his first motocross on a borrowed Malco, battled with Chris Carter to a tie for second in the 250 Jr. class. Huff I s a 39 year old Modesto motorcycle mechanic who has many years of hard scrambles under his belt. His age Is enough to put him on the spectator side and let the kids do it, but It I s rare to see him not win atrophy.
