~CYCLE ~NEWS "America's #1 weekly motorcycle newspap•• You'll always see It FIRST In Cycle News!" HELP FOR JUVENILE HALL On behalf of the boys in Riverside Juvenile Hall I would like to thank you for your most generous contribution of 10 subscriptions. These kids get very little and appreciate anything that is done for them. The hope for the coming year is to start a program with bikes that will encourage the boys to think about a career in some field of motorcycling. Thus far we have been met with great response in the few things we have presented and the future looks good. Any suggestions anyone in your great readIng audience might have we would be glad to hear about or if anyone who is interested in supporting the JUvenile HaIls in theIr areas and would .like to know what has been done out here please let us know. Contrary to popular belief just because a kid is In Juvenile Hall It doesn't mean that he is no good and if they can be helped at this age It will surely cut down on the population of our prisons in the future. . Thank you again for your most generous gift. ELAINE JONES Juvenile Hall Auxiliary Riverside, Cal. NOT SO Dave Smead-are you writing an article or an edItorial? In any case you should get your facts correct before trying either one. You wrote that Jim Dawson and Larry Shoemaker have been riding for Yamaha Thousand oaks regularly. Not so. Jim does ride for Yamaha Thousand Oaks, but, Larry rides for Yamaha International of Canoga Park. Also It was your remark that Yamaha Thousand Oaks imported the Bast Brothers for this race, not so. Jim Dawson, ,Bill Payne, Steve Bast and Mike Bast are very close friends. They wanted to ride together and It was their team. All the teams were good, but It is my opinion that the team of Yamaha Thousand oaks had more than just a team, they had the enthusiasm to win. They really were charged up for the race. JIM MORAN Simi, California HEARTS OUT TO HART I would like to congratulate Tim Hart for his outstanding performance (despite a little hard luck) in the recentInter-Am Motocross Series. I would also especially like to thank his sponsors, Competition Service Inc. of San Pedro for their efforts in behalf of American Motocross and motorcycling in general. This shop is small and relatively new. For these few men to sponsor a young man to such a fine standing in World Motocross is a great achievement. BRUCE WING Torrance. Calif. A THANK YOU TO LAS VEGAS On Sunday, September 21, oflast year, our 5 year old son, Michael, was seriously injured at a motorcycle race. He was knocked unconscious and had quit breathing. Thanks to Steve Shawand Tom Johnston's quick thinldng, they got his breathing started again, When the ambulance arrived at the hospital, he was X-rayed right away and was found to have a fractured skull and a broken left leg. He was in the hospital for 19 days and has to have his leg in a cast for 6-8 weeks. Almost Immediately, the help started coming in to us. . The Silver Link's and Duster's Motorcycle Clubs, both, sent us checks. The Groundshaker's and Checkmate's Motorcycle Clubs, had a motocross benefit for Mike . Vegas Eagle Motorcycle Shop (Tim Allen and Jim Grogan), donated a MiniBike and sold raffle tickets all over town. Silver CIty Scrambler's donated the track and Silver Queen's hosted a TT Scrambles with Silver City Scrambler's, Vegas Valley, Duster'S, and Bush Buster's doing all the work. This letter is being written to thank everyone in the Las Vegas area. Not only for the money but also for all their time. We always had one 'of the racer's, their wives or parent's with us at the hospital. We've tried to thank everyone personally but we know we've missed someone. AgaIn, thanks to all of you Las Vegas Racer's and familles for your prayers, your donations, and your time. MR. & MRS. BOBBY WILLIAMS Las Vegas, Nev. FAIR WEATHER RACERS To the riders who rode our Adelanto T ,T. the 11th we hope you all have a good time as we tried to keep from canceling our race. I think all of you should get a metal for going along with us as the raln washed out the regular track. As for all you 100 mile an hour falr weather racers, you missed a heck of a good time and sorry you couldn't go along with the good guys. DICK KOUNS Lynwood, Cal. soon to reason with him about thIs proposal after readers have had a chance to write him their views of SB 37 . Letters should be sent Immediately to sen. Nejeldy. c/o senate Post Office, sacramento, Calif. AN INCOMPLETE GUIDE TO CYCLE RACING I have been riding motorcycles and reading your paper for three years and (and very pleased with both) and until this time have enjoyed cow-tralling and Sunday afternoon rides at the desert. I will be returning to the U.S. from a tour of dUty in the NavY around late April or early May of 1970 and would appreciate the following Information: 1) How to get an official number from AMA, CMA, ACA, or any other organization. 2) Which club membership 15 accepted at the majority of races in Southern California. 3) How to get applications to various races (t,e, Motocross, T-T Scrambles etc .) , I would also llke to know what the meaning 15 of "MARTINI" as seen on some of the European's sweat-shirts, I have always been unable to find the • YOIC• • BLOCK THAT BILL! I would like to call attention of the motorcycling" public to a Senate Bill #SB37, introduced by Mr. Nejedly of Walnut Creek, California. This bill if passed would ban all motorcycles from all overnight areas of State Parks. I would encourage all motorcyclists to write to their State Senator regarding this attempt to deprive motorcyclists from the use of these public fac1lltles. Perhaps an article in your publication alerting motorcyclists and encouraging them to write their Senator and Assemblyman would help avert this injustice. Also a listing of names and addresses of Senators would be helpful. In Northern California write: Mr. Fred W. Marler , Jr., r.o. Box 2297, Redding, Calif. R.L. McDANIEL Chico, Calif. ED. NOTE- Camper-trallbike owners would be seriously affecled as well touring riders. We will vis i t Senator Nejeldy answer, no one seems to knowl DENNIS L. McCOMAS Seattle, Wash. When the USN brings you to the USA, Dennis, contact the AMA , CMC or AMA and they will issue you a number PDQ . Most motorcycle shops and all AMA races should have applications a vailable. The address of the CMC is in thi s week 's CYCLE I'l/EWS Ca len dar. and you may write the ACA at P.O. Box 247, Fullerton. Cal. Almost all desert races are AMA sanctioned. The CMC perhaps holds more motocrosses but the ACA has road racing also . In cases where the sign-up is not done on race day . clubs will provide entry blanks if you write for them. ""ow. as it was once explained to me. "MARTINI" is a drink ; something like Italian Gatorade except that instead of being drunk at the races it is usually s ipped at the troph y presentation and sometimes far into the night...Ed. HOW DO I GET STARTED? I would like to compete in trials but I do not have enough knowledge about the . sport and the pre- trials preparation. I now own a Hodaka that I ride on nearby trans, What kind of mod1t1catlon Is required (expansion chambers, long travel shocks)? What is the sanctioning organization that runs the trials here In Southern Calif? and what is the address of this organization? . HENRY KIM JR. Los ·Angele s , Cal. Your Hodaka will make a suitable trials mount for a beginner but there are .certain modifications that are desirable to have : greater steering lock. gearing changes etc. The largest and most active trials club in the state is the Southern California Trials Association with chapters in the Los Angeles and san Diego areas. Contact the m for further info rma ti on about your lIodaka and their schedule for trials schools and competition. Drop a line to : S.C .T.A., 6:121 Lenore Ave •• Garden Grove. THE HALT AND LAME AID THE THIRSTY I would like to thank #477x of the Invaders (who seized) and the Hodaka rider (twisted crank) in the 100's who gave me gas enabling me to make the pits in the Master Links desert race. Both of these riders had problems of theIr own but still had time to give me , help . BILL FAY Los Angeles, Cal. NEW TWIST ADDED TO ASCOT'S MOTOCROSS RACING GARDENA, CAL., Jan. 9, 1970- Professional motocross will return to Ascot Park Sunday, January 25 but with a slighUy d1!ferent twist. Race promoters Bob and Gary BaIley announced they will hold a three hour team race on the demanding Gardena, Cal. track. The three hour marathon will get under way at 11 a.rn, with an exciting Le Mans type start. Machines will be lined up against the crash wall with engines shut off. Riders will line up across the track and walt for the signal to start. When the flag drops, they will sprint to their motorcycles, start them UP, and shoot into the first turn. A thousand dollars will be at stake so the racing should be top notch and uP to the usual Ascot motocross standard. The program has been designed with spectator comfort and convenience in mind and the day's program will be over before the late afternoon Ascot chill sets in. CRACK EASTERN TEAM CHALLENGES WEST J Cemoto East, BuItaco distributors for the East and Midwest, . has announced that they will be loaded for bear Jan. 25 at Bay Mare, when the Bay Mare ComboCross gets off the ground. Challenging the R-D Malco crew in the Special " Team Race will be such " heavi es " as George Cunha and Gordon Razee, both A.M.A . National Number holders from Rhode Island, and another New Englander, Tom Canning. Spearheading the Bultaco assault will be "Super Bruce" Maguire from Schenectady, New York. During a recent interview in Cycle News, Barry Higgins (top American rider in the recent InterAm Series) stated that Maguire was the toughest rider in the U.S. that he had faced. Bruce, made headlines earlier this year when he led a sensational American victory in the Annual Can-Am Challenge Moto-X at Copetown, Ont., and again later in the season when he managed to beat out Husky team rider Gunnar Lindstrom in both 250 and 500 classes at a motocross in Lunenburg, Massachusetts. Yamaha of Thousand oaks, the current Team Challenge champions, will also be back defending their crown and a strong bid can be expected from Orange County Cycle.
