R iders By Steve Wakeman JACKSONVILLE, ORE., Dec. 28, 1969The rush to get off the starting line and out in fr ont of the pack caused a few riders to hit the mud and go salling over the handle bars in front of the spectators at the granite pits Hare Scrambles; Dec . 28th. The riders dld five laps on a three mUe course with one check point midway in the race and another at the starting point. The riders mad e good time even though there were patches of ice and snow, and one muddy bUl. The race began with a dead engine start. The bikes then went uP a hill and between two flags in front of the spectators. Just at the bottom of the hill was a S.iIi., ledge which the bikes had to jump. The riders had to pull up on the handle bars of their bikes to keep the weight off the fr ont of the bike as they made the jump, If the front wheel hit fir s t, the riders usually found themselves airborne as they were thrown from their bike . Chuck Buchanan, an ex -Medrord rider from Portland, took first place riding a Greeves in the Open class. We were honor ed to have three Eugene riders, two of which were sponsored by Oregon last year to enter a four hundred mUe endurance race where they placed fifth . One Eugene rider, Keith Nerseth, ridlng a 250Cc C- Z , took first place in his class as well as first overall. I, 1970Rapid Ralph Waldman, 88z, celebrated the arrival of the New Year and his Expert plate with a decisive win in the 15-lap feature at the San Francisco Cow Palace. Second went to Greg Hodges, 56y, who worked his way up from sixth place and third went to newcomer Kenny Roberts. The new Novice, 8OY, rode his first professional race and did a great job just in making the Maln. Waldman took the lead on the flag with Russ Powell, 5 Bz, close behind but Powell lost his front wheel traction and watched young Roberts slip on by. Next to get by was Hodges who seems forever to be catching UP. Hodges passed Roberts on lap eight as inexperience showed uP and the newcomer started to go too wide coming out of the corners. His Novice number will be something to live uP to as its previous owner, Jim Rice, takes uP National 24. In the ten lap consolation, George Carter, 24z, separated from the pack right off and was a hard man to catch as he jetted away. The Trophy Dash was easUy won by Bruce Teixeira, 154y, Billy Morgan, 25Z, went to the foul line after pushing a little too much and before he got turned around the flag went uP and with it Morgan's temper and the hoots from the crowd. Bob Scally, 7lZ, performed his usual mastery of the motorcycle juggle in his qua.l1fying heat by jumping over a tire without the assistance of holdlng onto the handlebars . He still managed to flnlsh second and went on to the Main . The first heat was won easUy by Teixeira with Terry Sage, 70z, passing Scally on the inside as Scally, again, let it all hang out. In the first Semi, Scally was in the hot spot, fifth, when Jim Rice tried to get a wheel inside of Waldman and balled off for his effort thereby enabling Scally to finish fourth and obtaining a spot in the main. In the second heat, Chal De Cecco tangled with George Carter and wound uP on the concrete. Billy Morgan led it until The lIallllps In the air and Mark Bre lsford lI'abs a bll handful of sky. Jerry Baugh, 41y, 1uck1!y finished third after going through a death wobble series. The second semi went to Russ Powell, 58z, now more than ever becoming the fan' S choice for " Black Bart". Al Kenyon, 8ay, came all the way from the foul line to finish fourth, on the rear wheels of Roberts. In the previous week's event the 1969 indoor season closed on a famlllar note for National number 87, Mark Brelsford. He had won another one. The Maln Event was a long time in running as starter Jerry Barkley had his hands full of 6 Experts, 1 Amateur and 1 Novice, all who read starters a little on the fast side. Brelsford took the jump with Rice and Romero in tow. At the end of lap I , Rus s Powell 58z, locked uP with Chal De Cecco, 85y, and rode him downver y hard. Almost immediately, at the other end of the track, Dave Hansen, 22y, did a standup, . handlehar, end over and out came the black flag. An in- line restart was the rule as two laps wer e completed, much to the displeasure of the fans . They wer e also unhappy with Powell and expressed themselves thusly. . Brelsford led off and with Rice fairly close in, left the rest of the pa ck foll owing Romero around. Hansen made the only sign1ficani change dur ing the 15 laps by moving into four th in fr ont of Butch Cor der , 92y. As the checkered came out, Mark was already picking his way through the back of the pack. Dan Haaby, national number 22, rod e his factory Yamaha to a victory in the 10 lap consolation and showed that his frame design is working correctly. Nowhe plans on putting some work in the engine to bring out some extra horsepower. This s er ies will be his te st ground for the Houston National. In the Trophy Dash Gene Romero shook his head and the starter dropped the flag and Romero, once again, psyched his way off the line first. This was the three lap trophy dash and he was the winner . At the December 20th meet Mark Brelsford, comandeered firs t place and led all 15 laps in the featur e event. Second went to rapid Ralph Waldman, who was really with it. Ralph won his semi and was on the pole of the main by virtue of a 3/10' s second faster time than Brelsford's Seml. But as the flag went uP to start the main Brelsford's Harley was fastest exiting the first turn. Third went to Greg Hodges, 56y, who is justas fast as the rest, but has troubles with sp1nntng tires at the start line . Hodges was hard pressed by Dave Hansen, 22y, who came fr om the foul line to finish fourth . , Jim Rice, 80y, opening night winner, was dumped by Russ Powell, 58z, early in the race and Mike Yarn, 46z, 1967 indoor champion, suffered the same fate as the hard charging SanAnselmo Expert tried to catch the leaders after a poor start. The next event, Jan. 25, will be a special as Evel Knievel will attempt an indoor jump record, if there is such a thing, by trying to jump five vehicles. He will probably start in the parking lot and finish uP in the pits.
