Second in the title Wt was Scottlsb star Bert HarklDs and lhlrd placepl:ter was bearded Englishman Howard Cole. Sl.xteen of the world's top dirt tract exponents contested the event and provided champagne racing over twenty beats. Other lI1ternational competitors 1ncluded BW Landels (Scotland), Roy Trigg (England), Helmut SchiPPI (Austria) and Ted Lindskog (Sweden). Also 111 the line up were several ace Aussles who bad just returned from a six month stint in England, namely John Langt1eld, Greg Kentwell and Garry Middleton. Eacb rider competed five tlmes maIdng it possible to score a maximum of fifteeo points. But, 111 beat 19, HarklDs went down narrowly to Garry Middleton. The race was a cracker. The pair fought shoulder to sboulder for the 1eIId, hardly letting !lun11gbt between them. The crowd weut wild when Middleton won as it meant a run off between Airey and Harldns tor the trophy. AIrey gated best 111 the run off and led HarklDs through the drst turn after Bert bad given his bike too much throttle at the tapes. Tbls caused bls front wheel to lJtt bIgb 10 the air, and by the tlme be bad righted bls macb1ne, Airey bad galJ1ed that vital advantage. Bert took up tile c:hal1enge and pressed Jim all the way, but Airey was not to be denied and went on to win by a mere bike length. Tblrd overall with 12 polots was Howard Cole, a World ChampionsblP finalist th1s year. Cole, along with Kentwell and Trigg, was riding borrowed equipment for the meeting. Their normal maChines were still on the high seas between England and Australia. Ironically, the top two placegetters 111 the title are now well known to American fans. It Is only a matter of weeks slnce Har klDs and Airey rode at the Orange County track, Costa Mesa, Callf. wb11e en route from Britain to Kangaroo Land. Both have been contracted to ride in Sydney th1s summer season, Airey for the Sydney Sbowground and HarklDs tor the Frank Oliveri organization at Liverpool.
