PERSEVERANCE PAYS FOR DASCH By John Blanton AUSTIN, TEX. Dec. 14, 1969-R1d1ngthe crest of a wave of spectacularly good fortune, the Austin Molo-Cross Park season continues to see more beauUful weather with each meet as fall turns into winter. Seventy-six entries were signed uP for the Sunday the fourteenth event, and ftrst to the starting line was the l25cc Junior class for beginners. The Junior competition was never in doubt as Jack Hicks (Penton) won the three heats by a great margin. So c1earcut was the outcome that Jack should voluntarily advance himself to the Senior division for the next meet. Second with three seconds was Clifford Vrandenburg (Yamaha), and third was the previous class winner James Sloan (Kawasaki), with a third, a fourth and a fifth. Gary Bigley'S monopolization of the l25cc Senior class seemed unassailable until the third' heat when Perry Lorenz (Penton) came around first on the opening lap, but presently Gary brought his Yamaha up and kept his reputation intact. The man who has shown that he can beat Gary, Bennie Campbell, ran far back in the first heat and soon dropped out,_ his Yamaha obviously aIUng. Benny Garrett (Bultaeo) finished second overall, and Austin Motocross Park owner George P.arks finished third overall riding a Yamaha. Lorenz finished fourth despite taking second in the third heat. Bigley's Yamaha team-mate, Jack O'Leary, Jr., made it two for the team in the 250ec class, as be repeated Gary's performance. Thlstwo-manracingteam, riding out of O'Leary Senior'S Austin Yamaha sales, has posted a similar string of stunning victories in months past, and their key seems to be determination and thorough preparation. They ride with exceptiooal s~ and their Yamahas never seem to falter. Barring an accident (rare) or an unusual adversary, they clean house wherever they go. O'Leary's closest competition, Rob! Holbert (Ossa) and BU1 Kasson (CZ), fought a close duel in the ftrst heat until BID crashed. Rob! did likewise in the third heat but finished etghth to take second overall. Carlos Ramirez was third overall on anAmerican Eagle, having finished three, seven and three. Fourth was Scott Robinson on a CZ. Ramon Dasch seemed destined never to see victory in the Open class, for he spent the ftrst two heats dogging the heels of Gayle Bradley. The CZ riders were closely matched, and neither could do much about the ten yards separating them. However, in the last heat Bradley's fortunes failed him, and Dasch took ftrst overall after finishing behind PatRogers (Husqnrna). Bradley placed fifth in the heat for second overall, and Rogers was Gaylo Bradloy (CZ) loads Ramon Dasch (CZ) thrOUlh tho treaeh.OlIs dips at Austin Mato. cross Park In thl first Opon class hlat. third overall. joe Rachel on a Matco was fourth overall. The two Husk;y riding Swedes were followed by Roger De Coster and Jirl Stodulka both on CZ. Russ Darnell was ftrst American and fourth overall ahead of 1oea1 riders Tom McCralne (Matco) and John DeSoto(CZ). A crowd of over 10,!lOO was treated to three 20 minute motos with the European riders. The course was very scenic and near the seashore. Russ Darnell described the 1.2 mile tract as dUftcult ~ a little too duSty for his liking. He said that It was similar to some of the French courses he has raced on. The w1nn1ng Swedes lapped no one in the ftrst motos and it is reported that one even stopped long enough to accept a soft drink from a bystander and rode half a lap with a drink in one hand. In the third moto it was show time and Kring and Aberg really ftred uP lappingeverybne but the third and fourth placers. Some of the Europeans raced in Hawaii last year and they as well as the mainland riders seemed to be impressed with how much the Islander motoerossers had 1mP.roved.
