appreciate wllatever you were dolng a great deal more, but somehow caused a feeUng of pride to seeP to the surface whenever you finished a day with him. He also had a general concern for his fellow man and whenever he saw an Injured rider on the trail, Clyde would drop out of the race, assist the man, then, rather than give uP, jump back in with the same desire and commitment he had entered the race with. Clyde was one of the few people I have known that enjoyed his own company. He took many hikes in the mountains behind his beachfront home north of Malibu, following deer paths or streams, and then he would return home late In the afternoon to relate his outings with his pretty wife, Kay, and their three daughters. On October 3, 1969, Clyde passed away due to cancer. He accepted this dreadful challenge as he did the hills and mountains in his ute and managed to ouWve the time the doctors had given him by seven months. But, when the end was apparent for Clyde, he faced it as no man could ever hope to face such a tragedy ••• with courage. The second weekend of January, 1970, there will be a memorial race for Clyde. It will be sanctioned by District 37 and held In Southern Callfornia. ThIs Is our Iaet organiZed effort to pay tribute to a bike rider and friend who loved ute, but assuredly his memory will stay with most of us long after the dust in the desert has settled and the clear, crisp air has returned to quiet. For wherever we find men with the desire to experience, ellploreand to challenge and at the same moment take the time to appreciate his fellow man•••we will see a Uttle bit of Clyde Howdy.
