RIDER
against h1m, she hobbled the remaining distance to the
receiving entrance.
The busy lobby suddenly quieted as all eyes turned
towards KathY. The nurses were aghast. They rushed a
wheel chair uP to her and pushed her down the corridor
without asking any questions. John sat down wearUy and
began filUng out the long admittance blank.
"The poor girl", the gray-haired admitting nurse remarked, shak1ng her head and glaring at Johnny as if he
were some inhuman monster. He came out of his stupor
long enough to glare back at her. "What do you mean?" ,
he snapped. "She'S here isn't she?" The nurse turned back
to her typewriter, still shaking her head.
P
atients could have visitors twice a day, and
Johnny came both times. in the evening Mike and
Rita were with him and they stopPed first at the
nursery to make s1lly faces at John's new son.
"Look at those fists, w1ll you Mike? He'S got a
grip that won't quit." He elbowed Rita's husband.
"He'll make one hell of a bike rider."
Then they entered the maternity ward. There were
three other new mothers in it with Kathy. Her nearest
roommate had new visitors this time and Johnny enjoyed
repeating the story of how KathY came to the hospital.
With each retelling the story was il'nproved, excitement
and suspense added, and of course, exacting credit was
given to the dependabWty of his motorcycle. Kathy rolled
her eyes at her bed neighbor, smirking her amusement at
her husband's braggadocio.
Scooting the chairs closer to her bed, Mike and -Rita
helped themselves to the large box of chocolates on the
night stand.

"Well," Rita asked. "What'd you name h1m?"
"Norton", .they answered simultaneously. Choking
back the initial giggles they felt erupting from a bottledup hilarity, they f1nally let go. It was contagious. The
others in the ward joined in, f1ll1ng the room with thetr
laughter.
