AT THE END OF THE ROAD 5 3~./I,,4 lo:I ~ 13.()()() t.J ~yl SkraIBk By 1Itdu /I ~Mti4 35() ()" SAN FRANCISCO- Judy, the sprite wbose Cherubic Image bas been decorating Cycle News tIlese many weeks, climbed slowly, almost pa1nfu1]y, off tile motorcycle. ~ I pointed the camera at her. She'd become weary of tbat 10 the point of DODcooperation, but tb1s time she responded with tile most utterly bappy smUe I'd seen for weeks. CUckl aDd tile moment was recorded. The picture tbat resulted is worth more tban any amount of adjectives 10 express the way she felt as she stood by tile moiorcycle for lIIe last time. Judy was home.Andafter tbree JIlontbs and 13,000 miles of moiorCycle louring, she knew she wouldn't have 10cUmb back on tbat damned machine on the morrow. We've been home a week now, and Judy is still smiUng. She basn't gone near the moioreycle, either. "It's tired," Judy says. "It needs a rest." Which statement, altbough 1nd1cative SAVE! These filters clean belter, restrict less, and are completely washable. --- -1ocIoc- of a certaln affection for tile machIne which served so well, is not entirely accurate. Better 10 say tbat she needs a rest from it. What the motorcycle needs Is a good bath and tune-up. It is a testimontal 10 the re11abWl;y and qua11l;y of the Honda C B 350, tbat only tb1s minor work will bring it up 10 satislae10ry standard. Of course, there are some part replacements beyond a tune-up which should be performed - the chain, for instance, although st1l1 serviceable, bas some very stitt 11nks, and should be retired. The paper element air filters, once yellow in color, are DOW a ,dingy grey. They too must be replaced. These parts are those which have a relatively limited We expectancy, and for which replacement is normal. Some problems did show up on tile road which must be class1f1ed as parts failures. Fortunately, they were minor: - the head11cllt low beam burned out. - tbree center stand springs fatigued and broke (I DOW carry a spare.) - the trout fork seals gave ql. Of these fallures, the demise of the fork seals Is most serious, aDd w111 necessitate stripping tile forb for replacement. Despite these de11ciencies, I tb1nIt tile record of the Honda is outs1:aDd1ng. A small. sport;y mAchine pressed intoa big louring bike's job, it bas acquitted itself well.
