Ellett Gets Bird Story and Photos by Dick AhIefeld It is always a pleasure to ride a motorcycle event that is well' Planned, and certainly the Orange County Motorcycle Club's annual turkey run was just that. Tradition calls for the prior winners to hold the event each succeeding year. The event is open to the membershIp and their invited guests. It's an enduro type of affair; all dirt riding; with a rather strange set of rules. One can carry all the time keePing devises he desires from the family alarm clock to exotic slide rules. The kicker comes from the rule that no speedometers or tachometers are allowed - so, what it all comes down to; guess work. Jerry Ross and Clayton Jiles had the honors of putting on the run, having done rather well the prior year. The course was to be two 20 mile loops. An averaEe of 14-1/2 mUes per hour was established for the entire event. Most of us were convinced that there had to be a catch in an average set this low, and there was. , Part of the trail wound through a narrow sand canyon. The walls seemed 200 feet hIgh and the hairpin turns had both handlebars touching the wall at a time. Mter nearly five miles of that to knock a hole in our averages we welcomed the open desert sections where we had a chance to hang loose and catch up to our own time slot. . i '·i i i . ,. Mike Martin did a terrific endo while trying to show everyone how to make up time while going over one of the two big down hills. Checks were marked on trall side with lime and numbered in sequence. A card was issued at the start and all each rider had to do was enter his time on arrival at the numbered checks. It continued to be guess work; for without an odometer it is quite difficult to gauge one's distance of travel. The winners were offered a choice; a nice trophy to add an additional memorial to the display shelf; or a turkey on which to feast at Thanksgtving time. . Wendell Ellett, OCMC member, won the event on his 40 inch Triumph, dropping 12 points. Yours truly, also mounted on a 40 incher, managed a 2nd with a 14 point loss. Troy Hodge placed 1st visitor, dropping 18 points. Troy was riding his old and somewhat battered 40 inch Triumph. Ken Locke, OCMC member, got 1st lightweight (less than 25Occ) on a Penton with a loss of 105 points. Seems as though a lot of jack rabbits kept getting in Men' 5 way and they would - ah~ lead hIm astray. GROUP DISCOUNTS OFFERED FOR L.A.
