Dec. 14 - Whenever tile Sldeback Association, those fuD-lo91ng pixies on Three wbeels, throw a desert bare scrambles you can be sure of a few surprises. One of tile surprises tb1s week happened to our veteran desert correspondent Dick Wrlgbt. Dick kicked a rock somewhere In tile sagebrusb and It didn't get out of tile way. Wrlgbt bas a great and violent dislike of rocks anyway and we feel certain that tile broken leg tbls one banded J11m wU1 not endear rocks to blm In tile future. Meanwb1le, when you see Rlcbard po1n,t1ng b1s camera at you from bebtnd a bush In future desert races, please cIon't aim for b1s busb. He woo't be able to get out of tile way quite as fast for a few montbs. All was well otllerwlse at tile S1debacks basb near Four Corners In tile b1gb desert. Except that tile four leaders, Intent on tIlelr pursuit during tile first of three 35-m1le loops, lost tile lime coming through tile pits and missed tile borne cbeck. The sponsoring club was still debating whetller or not to dtsquallfy them as Cycle News went to press. I! tile f1n1sb1ng results stand as we counted tIlem, Howard Utsey and his big CZ sandburner wU1 merit tile giant First OVerall trophy and all tIlose glorious District 37 points. Howard was closelY pursued through tile fouled-lIP f1n1sb by mustacbloed Mike Patrick on b1s scraming 250 Yamaha and just 30 seconds beb1nd Mike came leapln' Larry Bergquist witll b1s Bu1 just barelY making It In 3rd overall. Actually Larry's bike quit for undetermined reasons(outof gas?) just scant yards from tile finish and had to be towed In by anotller motorcycle witll a rope. That's anotller one for tile club referee to ponder. The fourth member of tile 4- way f1n1sh foulllP was Al (Yamaha) Baker, who also lost tile llme In tile heat of tile chase and missed tile borne check. Flftll overall (or whatever) was Wbttey MartIno (Husqvarna) followed by Steve (Montesa) KIrk and Dave Lewis (360 Greeves). Jack Byers on b1s BSA eng1ned Rickman was tile first 4-stroke In, right beh1nd Lewis. First 250 Amateur to f1n1sb, repeating b1s Barstow-Vegas victory, was Don Watkins Jr. on a Montes&. He placed IOtb overall. First 250 Novice was Dale Brass·field, l6t1l overall. We were unable to learn Identities of tile first 500 Amateur and Novice or tile first 125, etc. Jeff Wright, our Injured correspondent's otfsprtng, won tile lOOcc tratlbtke class after be and tile rest of tile tra1Jb1ke leaders got lost In tile dusty first loop. Starting 15 minutes beb1nd tile bIg bikes, tIley roared along tile right of a flat, brushy dustbowl 15 mlles out, only to miss a turn to tile left and find tIlemselves In a box canyon. The course was marked well enough but, as Dave Lewis remarked, "Unless you're In tile first 30 or 40, there's DO chance to see that turn." Terry Clark, Mark Rader, Ken Buckspan and Wright led tile trallblke parade through tile pits for Loop One. Then It was Terry, Ken and Jeff. Buckspan threw bls chain and tIlen tIlere were two. Terry's engine reported blew, giving Jeff tile victory. Altllough tile course was fast and rough and, everyone agreed, "really dusty." It 1ncluded two dry Jakes and one rocky 1IPh1ll. About 400 rlders started tile 105 m1le challenge. b.m" 'fAST' W'''''ERS ,,, MEIICA" 1000 Hodaka is the undisputed champion of the TraUbike class! Winner of three national championships in a row!
