Dec. 14, 1969Sunday morning, Dec. 14th was bright and clear as 200 San Diego area motorcycle touring enthusiasts met at lhe Oceanside Shopping Center to sign in for the Trl-Clty Motnrcycle Club's Christmas Benefit Poker Run. A questionaire contalnlng four (4) true or false statements pertaining to California Motnrcycle Vehicle Laws on one side and a map of Northern San Diego County on the other was- glven to each entrant. The rlder was to answer true or false to a question,. pick lhe letter in the proper column and proceed to !bat location. J! his answer was correct, be would find a manned check point. If be was incorrect, he found notblng. The route led the Road Rlders over Uttle used roads through the colorful flower farms, and wild back country verdant with California Holly trees, Uve oak, scrub pines and truck farms growing winter crops. The run terminated at Live Oak .Park In Fallbrook where old fashioned famUy style piciuc lunch was serwcl, followed by- fun and games. The clever trophies fashioned by a Christmas card laminated onto a walnut backboard and base with a gold motnrcycle were custom made for the run. The souvenir pins were cast in plastic by club members and followed the traditional design of the young club's two previous rallles. The work and imagination put into this run was refreshing to the jaded ra1ly1sts who are used to seeing a unvaried repetition of all previous runs. The one year old club was chartered in late 1968 and conslsted almost entirely of Marine Corps famWes from Cemp Pendleton. Even now 90% of the members are from Pendleton. According to Club President, Stanley J, Stuber who is a clv1l1an, they have 28 active members and 12 on inactive status whUe they are overseas. The young and ambltious members put on their first run before most of their members bad ever gone on one. Slnce they didn't know what was suPposed to be done, lhey just scheduled a tour with activities that they thought would be entertalnlng. Their next two, including the Chrlstmas Run, were Innovations of the first. As a result, the club is fast gaining a reputation of putting on orlglnal and highly enjoyable motorcycle runs. If more touring clubs would adopt the example of the Trl-Clty M,C. and not try to follow the moth-eaten stereotyped pattern that motorcycle rallles have evolved Into, the sport ir rallylng might once more revlve the lIiterest and splrit of fraternal fellowship !bat it enjoyed when our sport was young.
