BARSTOW, CALIF. Nov. 23 -All the fast guys were there - Roberts, Bergquist, Patrick and Poteet. The course was a 101lg one, ftfty miles in all. New territory, after the start. Larry Bergquist had the lead at the smoke bomb on his Bultaco but Tom Poteet was right behind him on a 250 Bultaco. • The course went out over some rreat boondock trails, then across two fourmUe d1:Y lakes, turned \lP a CO\lPle lollg fire roads, winding UP into the high hllls. J.N. Roberts got around Poteet and took over the lead from Bergquist but couldn't lost him. Tbe two dueled it out tor about twenty miles with Mike Patrick on a 250 Yamaha and Poteet _tching the action from a hundred feet back in third and fourth places. Patrick said "afterwards, "Those two were rea.lly havillg a ball! They must have chaDged backand forth teD times". The battle look its toll as Bergquist had to drop out. Comillg into the pits it was Roberts with a big lead followed by Poteet. Every0Ilg was running low on gas; a lot of riders ran out about five miles before the pits. Patrick ran short of gas and sputtered through in third spot. On the second loop Roberts held the lead with Patrick moviDg \lP to challeuge in a CO\lPle of places, but Roberts kept the pressure on and came in for the win after two hours and thirty minutes of hard riding.
