Nov. 8, 1969 - National #87 Mark Brelsford returned to the short, short track at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds and won the 15 lap feature event. The first year expert dlsplayed his SUPerb talents and agility to a packed house. There is no one in the world who rides like this young Harley-Davidson sponsored pilot. He screams around the asphlilt on the verge, it appears, of total destruction, with the rear wheel spinning way out and the handle bars completely locked. Butch Corder, 92yon a Triumph, was Mark's closest competition. Corder led the first laps, only to succumb to Brelsford's hard charge. The very slippery surface brought down four riders in the main. National #20, galloping Gene Romero, also ridlng a Triumph, went down in an oil slick and Phil Cancilla might have a broken ankle after a nasty fall under his machine. Last week's main event winner, Russ Powell, also fell on the slick surface. The surprise of the night was Terry Sage's fall and arising to a third place finish, The second qualifying heat wasn't even a lap old when Greg Hodges fell. Last week his chain broke. It could be a hard luck year. Another hard luck award goes to Mike Yarn, 46Z, who fell very hard last week. He was not expected to return but showed up with sore muscles, taped up to race. He lasted a few laps of practice and a lap of a qual1ty1ng heat before Mgr. Bill smith If If Wahwi Creek, Calif. 94596 (415) 934-1995 D~SI. If If ;U • * .. BRELSFORD SLAUGHTERS SAN By W. H. Spencer JOSE SHORT TRACK ta1l1ng. [n Heat One, #38, Chuck Palmgren from the East Coast was the last man to show. After starting his motor, l1n1ng up the flag droPPed, the motor dled and Palmgren was out of the action. Dane Hansen, ridlng a Bultaco, lost his gas cap and gas after a double trick, overthe-top flip, but was o.k. Heat Two went to Romero after a couple of black flags, which found him lying on the track. Romero's third restart was out of sight and he had no trouble winning over Chlil De Cecco, on a TrtumPh', and a hard charging Joe Soto, who was Bultaco mounted. Heat Three was different, as Don Castro tried an extremely close-in line of attack and was laid out each time. His first effort, against Terry Sage, brought down four riders. His second was only half as effective. The "CUPertino Crusher", AI Kenyon, started the fourth heat in a flash but couldn't keep Brelsford back and was pushed out by Russ Powell. That concluded AI'S efforts for the night. The Trophy Dash was won by Bob Scally. To make the dash, one must be in the top four qual11y1ng heats. Scally was in the dash, but the guy who had the pole in his heat wasn't verrrrry interresting. Above: Butch Corder shows Terry Sage the body english bit. Right, Brelsford sees the checkered flag, Then Came Johnson By Bill Byrd Among the many top enduro riders at Northern California's High Sierra Enduro was the National #1 Sportsman Scrambles Expert Paul Johnson. Johnson is currently recovering from a severely broken leg received in a fluke crash at Hayward Speedway last summer. Although not oftlclally entered, Paul spent the day rldlng with his high sliding, ground scraping, seemingly invulnerable sponsor, Rick Schell. As Schell came limping across the finish line, In a shocking daze, he Said, "I spent 3-1/2 hours trying to stay with that kid. He's actually riding faster than before his crash." Don Castro had his share of bad luck on the San Jose cement. ~",,, IAWASAKI ~~~~~~SflBY l!l~t. mOTORS ~tt~' MOTORCYCLES - SALES - SERVICE (415) 346 ELCAIiIND REAL 369-4112 REDWOOD CITY, CAUf. Most of the riders had no problem following the course, except for three guys wbo found themselves ten miles of[ course in Rogue River. Nov. 9, 1969The granite pits of Jackson were the site of a 24 mlle cross country race run around a twelve mlle course where Dick Shorb got his Greeves oft the line last but managed to pick oft riders one by one and grab the overall win. The dlfierent classes were started at two minute intervals so the little bikes wouldn't be run over. A front wheel straddle, dead engine start was used. When the flag Is dropped It Is a scrambles in iiself to get on the bike, start It and charge for the course. The riders found the course to be quite a challenge.
