Oct. 31, 1969 - Dan Haaby and Dave Aldana teamed up to double-team the flock of Triumphriders for wbat may be a flrst time ever for BSA at the Ascot TT's. Haaby and Aldana each won their heat races in the EJqlert and Amateur d1v1s1ons. Then Aldana pushed Haaby off the groove and nearly off the track to take the TrOPhY Dash win. 'They both came tack in the finals to win the yellow and white plate Main Events. Haaby f1na1ly found his BSA rllllll1ng the way he likes them and took the Expert final. He followed Gene Romero for many laps in third with Edd1e Mulder way out in front. Dan finally appeared tired of following Gene and moved by and away midway in the final. From then on it was only a matter of time before be was to catcb and pass Mulder who is noted fo.. his early lap surges but not his late lap speed. Haaby took the lead as the two riders started the 13th lap. He won it going away on the final two rounds with Romero all by himself in a d1stant third position. Edd1e Wirth returned to action to come from the tack and take fourth. The best heat ,ace of the night was turned in by Mert Lawwill, the only H-D rider entered. Mert was off last but great rid1ng and determination placed him first at the end of only four laps. Later in the pits Mert found serious engine problems and d1d not compete in the final. Aldana roared to a new Amateur heat race track record early in the evening and it was obvious that he was to bave an easy time in the Main Event. He then caPped off his record ride by winning the dash before lead1ng the Amateur final from start to finish. Ascot bas a new Novice TT point leader. It's John Hateley and his Montesa. John won the 250Cc final for the fourth time in five weeks and took the point lead away from Too Sloane. Hateley and his Montesa defeated a raft of Bultaco riders to win. Sloane was 11 th at the end of the first lap but again worked his way through the pack but could only climb to 4th before the race was over. John and Too both won their respective heat races earlier in the program. This coming Friday night is the last TT at Ascot for the year. 'The slltte championship title goes with the race that will find all of the Expert winners this season on band. Van Leeuwen, CoPpage, Romero, Wirth and Haaby, winners all, will be out for the last time. Mashburn, Aldana and Castro ride as Amateurs for the last time. Hateley and Sloane will decide who is the high point Novice for the year. It all haPpens this coming Friday night, Nov. 7th. Race time, 8:15 p.m. (Results on page 20) GROSSI GOES HOME Bob Grolli, the 19 year old Californian who hal imPIe.ed British fans with his performance in motocroa in recent weeks, hal returned to AmencL According to Motor Cycle News,. British motorcycle paper, Grosi stated upon depart=, "h's been great over here. You can be .1Ilgu)ar winner back bome, but over h_ you have to let it all hq out trying to keep up, and then you fall off." Grossi hopes to letum to England and the Continent next year for • fun IeUOn of racing.
