"ts UD. ffiVINE, CALIF. Nov. 2, 1969 - The weather couldn't have been better it they'd requested it as the ACA threw another one of their Saddleback Park motocrosses. The course lay-out was different, prompting several riders to to cOmPlain about the high speeds. But that was the way the ACA officials found the lay-out when they arrived In tile morning• . Another little beet was the mud section. It wasn't mud butwaterandlnpractice a lot of riders drowned out until the churning tires got the water down Into the surface. The water truck wasn't haPpy with the criticism and failed to water the rest of the track for the rest of the day. Due no doubt to all the other events going on the turn-out wasn't big, would you believe onlY flve 500 Seniors? But the Juniors were there In full force and there was enough action to keep the spectators haPpy. Each class ran three motos of six laps and after the riders meeting where rules were spelled out It wa off to the races. In the 250 Senior It was to be a battle between Torn RaPP (Bultaco) and Bruce Baron on a C-Z with George Etherirdge (C-Z), Mike Para (C-Z) and Dave Aldana ~Ossa.) along to make things interesting. "Rapid Rapp" did 'em in with Baron corning In for the second••..A.ldana looked great but was having a bit of a problem with ha ndlt ng and even flopped In the mudhole. He was dlsquallfIed for tile day along with Larry Nolen (C-Z), 250 Sportsmen) for faWng to start one moto from the llne•• ,Kiyomaru !Cato (Yamaha) took over the lead In tile first mota after Chuck Lund (C- Z) really showed them the way around for a bit but !Cato's bike threw a chain and that was it. He is returning to Japan and we know that along with us others w1ll miss bim, he's been II colorful addition to the sport and one heck of II competitor. It was George Etheridge who led off In the second mota' but he dropped back behind RaPP and Baron while Mike Pera (C-Z) who was reallY I.n there was forced to drop out on the Tower HIll with mechanical problems. . It was Jim 0' Neal In tile 500 Senior class on b1s C- Z. !Cato and b1s C- Z didn't make It through the first moto. Andre Pillon (Rickman) looked IIwfully good but was another DNF while Jesse Goldberg (Maico) recovering from II broken leg and Ron Fry (Husky) settled out the second and third places with Fry the way-ahead winner. All the ~OO's ran together and it was Chuck Hecker on a Maico who emerged the winner atter the three rounds followed by Jack Kell (Rickman) and Mike Cram on II Bllitaco. We all stood there wondering what tbe beck to do but Don dove in b1s truck, grabbed a big fire extlngu1sher, raced .down tbe gully and put tile blaze out aDd by tba.t time It was at least six feet In diameter. Earlier In the day it was Don and b1s American Eagle who wrapped up the 125 Sportsman class with young Brya.; Holcomb (Penton) putt1ng in more than a determined effort to beat Don. Shamrock member Bryar had a flat tire first round and destroyed b1s rear wheel but was able to borrow another and keep going for bis second over-all. Biggest class was of course the 250 Sportsman won by BIll Spann (C-Z) who was chased by B1ll Clements (Husky) and Larry Nolen on a C- Z. Nolen got third over-all but was dlsquallfled moving B1ll Gomen (C-Z) Into the third. Ohters looking good were John Rubclc (C-Z) who really got off the Une but was a DNF. Art Stevenson (Suzuki) had bis fun for the day when he· plowed into the course markers and dragged 'ern all down. • In the 100 class B1ll Gomen (Hodaka) led the first round but went out later. It was Hodaka all the way for the first four by the end of the day ridden by Reno Frezza, Jim Cooke, Skip Porter and DIck Fuller.
