The sky was overcast so the lightweights ran on a wet track which is something that has been an exception rather than the rule for day rac1og. The sidehacks were also on hand to enterta1othecrowdotspectators. The heavyweight program was opened with the sidehacks who can always be expected to put on a good show. Despite a slick, muddy track they put on a t10e exhibition. George Whitney and Phll Perdue led tor two laps only to be overtaken by the team ot RaJ,ph Whitney (brother Of George) and Gary Perdue " . :,~i .=} BILL ~ (tather ot Phll) who then took over and never rellnqulsted it agaln. Third place went to the tather-son team ot Frank Danielson and Frank Jr. It you want to see the sidehacks 10 action agaln they are going to Hopetown, then Barstow and on to the twenty-tour bour town, Las Vegas. Two Expert class Big Bore riders, Ray Vanderpool and Terry Dorsch battled wheel to wheel for eight laps before the tall Of the checkered. Ray tJnally grabbed the win away trom Terry. The 350-500cc Novice class saw a BSA one lunger ridden by Wayne Rutledge take the trophy. Stepben Lowell was second with Boyd Mason and Jerry Thomason third and tourth. Cbuck Wheat (Mal) had to contend with DwIght Harlow (BSA) as thay mixed it up 10 the back and played change places. When it was all over I t was Wheat, Harlow and Skeel. Jay Lewis (Yam)" started his day Off by taking the 50Cc Novice class over John Kavanaugh, Laurence Long and Slade Long. The lOOCc Novices always go at it hard and Sunday was no exception. When the final tallles were 10 it was Dave Tudor (Hod) who came out on top followed by Tim Beason (Kaw). Davey Davis (Bul) took over second spot and his long time rival Richard Sanders (Bul) was third. Steve "SPeed" Nichols (Yam) came closer to that number one plate by comfortably w1nn1ng the 125-20Occ AmateurExpert class. Dennis Voll (Bul) was second and Gary Scott (Cim) picked up his second third place of the day. There was a large turnout for the 250cc class and the big man of the day was Scott Elkins (Yam) who showed the guys the way home. Hugh Long (Bul) tried to change things but made only second. The 250cc Amateur-Expert class was won by Ron Powell (Kaw) followed by Ron Ringnon (Kaw). Third place went to Mike Hannon (Bul). And here he is aga1n folks: Gary Scott (Suz) moved down a notch but showed up tor his third plac1ng Of the day when he captured tourth. Gary is moving to the pro ranks next year and will be sponsored by Suzuki Sport Spot. A special "well done" should go to Roy Underwood who was the starter Of the day and did a great job.
