ComIng off the jump in the 250 Expert
Main, two flyers collided in mid-air
and crashed in a pIle of twisted metal
Friday. When the dust settled and the
riders were Wltangled, Mike Lane and

Jett Johnson amazi!!gly walked away uninjured. Guy Smith, JImmy Maxwell,
and Steve Synder following right behind
were able to avoid the wreckage, and
went on to finish in that order at the
Bakersfield Sprockets 6th Annual Benefit Scrambles.
The combined 125 Amateur and Expert Main Event was another heart stopper_ Two of the finest riders in the
business, Ron Tobey and Joe Rosebury,
raced wheel to wheel all the way. But
tought luck seemed to follow these two
First Ron missed a shift in the tight
horseshoe turn due to a bent "Iron
Boot" banging on the shifting lever,
which caused him to go down in the heat.
Joe ran out of gas in the last lasp of the
main. Joe took the heat race, but Ron
made the winner's circle in the main.
Victory in tiiis race assured Ron of the
District Number One plate for his Yamaha next season - quite a feat for this
fourteen year old, riding out of Earl
Wlpf's Shafter Yamaha ShOP.
