Joe Smith was put out by mechanical probl.ms so Mel may meet more competition nut w.. k. By Betty Nichols WILMINGTON, CAL. oct. 26, 1969- With so many spec1al events golng on at the other drag strips. we were glad to see twenty bikes out at Lions Sunday. Along with a few of the faithful regulars. a lot of new faces were on hand to do a little trophy winning. Jack Lynn Ilad nothIng but problems from the minute he hit the strip untillt was tIme to load up and head for home. II wasn't bad enough that he wasn't gettIng the speeds he felt he Should, but one of the holdIng springs for his battery slipped up over the top, causlng a dead short and burulng a hole In the battery case. Jack snatched that batlery out In a hurry. you can be sure of that. After the Inltlal shock of sparks and confusion Jack was quite a s1ght runnlng back and forth to the rest room with cups of water to wash off his machIne. He made a quick trip to Redondo Beach to scrounge another battery. but to no avaIl. Steve Fielding took the win with his modIfied 3 cyllnder Triumph. Triumph c11d It again In C Gas. llmars Strazd1ns took the honors In thIs class, but Charlie Cash came along on his Suzuki gasser to take E Gas at better than 107 mph. Tony Nicosia was In there riding as well as ever or perhaps better, because he walked off with the trophy -ror D Street with a speed of 111.00 mph. Joe Smith made on run and broke a vital part of his machine that put him out for the day. Therefore Mel Disharoon had the trophy free and clear for the Feul class. He decided to go out there and reallY earn It. And he did. His E.T. was 10:53 \)'Ith a speed of 153.84 mph. 200 pound Jack Simpson has plck.d up trophies with his Hodaka dragster and he is a rea I crowd pleas... Tor,.. "'s· GYT .ils • S,••~ Wort Later In the day. Mel's partner. Steve Brackett thought he would take the fueler on a run to see what he could do with It. The fire went out at the starling line. so there was no contest. They didn't mind too much since the trophy was already won. It was sort of a let down for Steve though, because he had walted all day long just to make that one run. One of the newer riders at Lion'S Is Jack Simpson who has turned Into a real crowd pleaser.
