U Cooper Motor's fantastic 500cc 3 speed Mateo, Lon Petersen dom1nated the Expert's class at Fontana Saturday ntgbt wblle Jim Fishback used a pair of Yamabas to win both the 125 and 250 Junior classes. Lon was jo1ned on the startlng llne by Jim Nicholson who, like Lon, was on a short vacation from Uncle Sam's Army. Jim rode a CZ to a second place ahead of L. Burns on a Husky. Burns was followed by a Fontana newcomer, Eddle Mulder. Eddie bad a braDd new Mootesa, but be was put out of contention when his carburetor vibrated I tselt apart in the last moto. Petersen's Mateo was truly awesome. That hairy cbested brute Is a full 500cc and needs only three speeds to get the power to the ground. In fact, Lon said that it could go around the course almost as fast in only one gear. Fitzpatrick was second ahead of B. Jones on an American Eagle. The 125 and 250 classes were run in two divisions eacb so a fourth moto for each class combined the top halt of both divisions to run for the laurels. His 1I0ntesa's carb came a..rt In the final moto. Jim Flsbback won the first three motos in his division of the 250 Junior class and was second in the 125 behind John Carmello. The 250 race was Jim'S all the way and after the fourth and flna1 moto be was rlgbt on toP followed by Greg Scbweers. Greg was the polot leader 10 the other 250 divts10n after three matos but when the last race bad been run Fishback out poloted him. Fishback and Carmel10 raced allntgbt 10 the 125 Dlv I battle aod Carmel10 went loto the flna1 moto ahead of Flsbback on points. As the pack charged loto the first turn the two colllded aod both went down. Scrambllng back uP, they charged atter the field In almost last plaCe. Fishback picked off riders one by one and 10 the flna1 laps took over the lead and lett the rest of the mob, including Carmello, behind. Second place 10 the 125 class went to Mark Venaas who was on top of the points bllllP in his division when the green flag dropped on the fourth moto.
