The start banner droppped at the bottom of a long upb11l valley with lots of tra1ls which is one of the best starting areas in the desert. N. on his Husky followed closelY by the rest of the pack. The first loop made a bend around to the left and bad three field checks. J.N. was leading as he came up the b11l to the third check but he did a big endo and lost about three minutes. Robert's down time allowed Mike Patrick to catch up and the pair went UP the b11l together. They rode past the Checkers rider banged In effigy and down the steep sandy b11l into the pits rwm1ng about twenty feet apart. These two dlleled It ollt for the entire second loop with Patrick clinching the lead near the end and corning in for a solid win. Roberts was second, with another fast pro, Larry Bergquist, taking third on bis Bultaco. Bill Friant pulled in for fourth on bis Husky and said, "The course was great except for those deep sand dunes coming in on the last loop". Also he had bigh praise for bis new Curnutt rear shocks. Steve Kirk was flith on his Montesa, followed by Bruce Dunford on. a Husky and Jack Byers on a Rickman. Doyle Fields was the first Open class rider in on a Triumph, Bernie Cayne was the first Amateur on a 500 Husky; Bob Karkel was the first Novice in on a 250Cc machine. Tho 100's wore started a cood half a" hour aft.. the blC bikes. ThlY didn't run Into dust for Quite a whili. Don Hill a 500 Amateur on a Husky came in wheel to wheel with Don Watkins Jr. who is also an Amateur. It was almost a tie for second Amateur. Young Steve Seritchfield had a great ride oll bis Yama.hli taking first l25cc class. And he Is a Novice. The 100cc class was started a halt hour after the big bikes which meant that the 100Cc leaders wouldn't run into dust for sometime. Jack Morgan had the lead at the smoke bomb, with all the young chargers right on bis tail. At the steep bill before the pits it was still Morgan with Mark Rader right' behind bim. Morgan held 'It on all the way on the second loop and went for broke. Morgan . came in for the win. Rader broke dq,wn in the heat of battle and Terry Clark, came in for second spot. Jim Summers was third. All were on Hodakas, Mitch Mayes was next taking first Amateur on a SS Hodaka, Gary Davies took second Amateur.
