In a series of match races between the visitor's and the top American riders, Rick Woods saved face for the U.S. boys by winning a specla.l match ra'Ce over Barry Briggs, four times World 'Champion. In the Handica;p Main Event, Ivan Mauger wa.s the only forelin rider and he seemed to m'8.ke I. 'Ca.ke--walk out of it. He wa.s getting used to riding this small tra'ck. Howev!lI', in the 'Course of racing Mauger injured his right foot a.nd batI to be hel;ped off the track. in the Scratcll Main Event, Rick Woods wa.s Iined'up against Barry Briggs, Bert Harkins and out to ride with his injured foot was Ivan MallgeI'. Off 'the llne,ttwas Mauger in the lead and Woods right on his rear wheel. Woods pulled 'ahead a.nd the grantlsb.nds 'Went wild. It looked as ,though Ivan's foot wa.s really giving hlm a hard time 8.S he didn't seem able to push Woods.. Ivan's cha.ln broke and Barry moved loto second. While Briggs was a.b1e to throw I. scare into Woods, R ell: got just a little more wheel to the ground and took the win. The last race of the evening was to pit Steve Bast against Ivan Mauger, but due to his injury, I. 'suhstitute wa.s sent In.
