Sharp Star.ler WALSWORTH AND OSSA WIN CAYUTA NATIONAL Frustrates Anxious Perris TTer's By Elaine Jones Dude W.....orth. riding .. 0_. _ .......11 wi...-. By BOYD REYNOLDS CAYUTA, .Y. Sept. 14-About 356 riders entered the 120 rniIe National Qlampionship held this Sunday at Cayuta, in the finger lakes region of New York state. The run through mountainous tenain was weD organized, but dry and dusty weather created problems for the contestants as a combination of dust and sunlight in the wood s made the course markers nearly invisible. Consequently, many spent their time lost, though the run was weD marked. The SUIface was hard and packed, rutted badly from the spring runs. RESULTS Champion: Buck Walsworth (Ossa) 971. PERRIS, CAL., OCt. 11, 1969 - New starting line procedures made for some or. the fairest starts in a long time and a lot of frustrated riders. 'The ready line was placed much farther back and the riders on lbe starting line who have gotten into lbe habit of starting to edge forward as soon as lbe green light comes on fouod out that lbe flagman was lbe starter not lbe light. Three flights of 100 Novices went at it and lbe first go saw Keilb Miller (Hod), who hasn't been around for a while, end uP on top after holding off Yamaha regular Wayne Whisenant. SkiP Gallagher, a tough competitor on his Honda 50, got in lbere for lhird and Tim Beason (Kaw) was fourth. 'The second go saw Bill Dobbs (Suz) repeat his victory from last week and beat a brolber act to do it. Tom Stanford (Hod) and Toby Stanford (Yam) were not only out to get BUI but were in competition wilb each olber. 'They settled for second and lhird. David Edge (Kaw) celebrated his second week of racing by taking fourlb. Mark Revels, a bridesmaid last week, made it as a bride Saturday by toPping the lhird round over Mickey Jones. Paul E. Lambert Sr. was lhird and an anxious rider named Earl, who forgot to sign his last name, was fourlb. By the time the Amateur/Experts got off lbe line they had aged ten years but they learned that lbey couldn't jump the gun. Doug Mason fouod his way home first wilb Rob Morrison,_ who has just been promoted to Amateur at Perris, right on his heels_ Kirk McDowell and Robert Sanders were lhird and fourlb. As usual, the 125 class was dominated by Yamahas but lbey put on a good show. Jim Kline and Steve Tinsley see-sawed back and forlb and really gave lbe spectators some good raclng. Steve blew it in the lhird heat by taking a bad spill and ended uP lhird since he was unable to finish. As he was being taken to the hospital he promiSed to be back next week and we hope he's rigbt. Kay KanaId moved into second-and..George GillesPIe was fourlb. 'The first 250 Novice class brought a new face as John Smith (Yam) topPed Tim Abshier (Yam), Dan Keyler (Bul) and Jim Arner (Yam) for lbe win. The up-for-grabs second 250 division was full of spills and ihrUls as Bob Greenstreet (Bul) won the first beat only to go head over teakettle in lbe second which was the wrong lhing to do since Ron Bourbonnais (Kaw) and Don Walters (Yam) were right on his lall. By the lhird heat it was anybody's race and when lbe dust had settled it was Ron Bourbonnais, Bob Greenstreet and Don Walters. Steady Larry Stapleton got up to be fourth. Loyal Penn is still leading the Amateur- Expert home on his Yamaha wilb Doug Mason second and Bob KlIne reversing lbe order from last week over Dennis Creason for the lhird and fourth spots. Mark BaIley (Hon) repeated his win from last week in a close one which had Larry Stapleton (BSA) second and Larry Walling (BSA) third. Bruce PrIor (HD) fourth. After many attempts lbe big boys finally got off lbe line and everyone was after Mike Posey who managed to keep his 650 TriUmPh in the rigbt place to take first and let Vince Graves (Mai) and Andy Skeel (HD) fight it out for second and lhird. Doug Mason mounted on a Montesa gave lbe boys a go and came up for a fourth. (Results on page 20) CMA Make.
