The majortl;y of tile nomiDees were all from desert clubs wbtc:h could mean that the scrambles stewards next year will be desert riders. 1bere's nothtng wrong in that, but it's nice wben everythtng gets balanced out. For BOme reason a lot of the scrambles clubs don't nominate people trom tbeir own grouP aDd too many that are nominated decline wbtle others througb constant re-sbutIDng of representatives are DOt eltgible to bold emcee However, Dick Kouns, who bas served so well in the positions he held this year, accepted his nomination. Bob SalDlders of the Ltglltweights was also nominated but he wasn't present so we don't know if he'll accept or decline. Being on the Competition Committee can be a certain amount of fun, but It's also a heck of a lot of work aDd means a bit of sacrifice. It's rewarding to put BOmethtng back into helping the sport you enjoy. We hear that the pit racers were as active as ever tbls past Slmday aDd that one birdbrain broke his leg in the Bay Mare pits. As the ambulance bad to haul him away, ~ class, the 500 Experts didn't get to ride their last moto. TheY'd have probably Uked to have broken birdbrain's otber leg to match. We've written on this problem of pit racing before aDd altbougb regulations· are usually enforced, albeit often loosely, we stlll bave problems. Our "Pit Racer of the Week Award" at Cycle News will go to someone who a CN correspondentpbotographs pit racing, wIletber it be del"!rt, motocross or scrambles. 'Ibat would make you feel less of a hero wouldn't it; to think how many thousands of people all over will see a picture of you actiDg Uke a yo-yo. The riders will be identitied, too. We'll start a Uttle campaign so that if a member of the Competition Committee or a District oftlcer catches a rider zooming around, he may write down his number, Worm the rider of this tact aDd turn it aver to tile Competition Committee. The CompComm then could pull the riders points for the day, or his riding card for say a month, or BOme other rea.conabJe penalty • At Sadd1eback Sunday, the Sportsmen M.C. used their !leat Uttle ramp to roll the bikes uP for fi!ch inspection. It sure saves the inspectors trom bending aver all day. They also write down your engine number on your entry so it's right, DOt wbat you think it is. Should a bike swapping protest come uP the evidence would be correct. Another thing they did was if a rider didn't have a valid AMA card he bad to sign uP for a new one right there. A CouPle of riders got hit for the extra bread just because Worthington didn't get their already renewed cards back quickly enough. I waited six weeks for my current one to come back. The rule book says that this is the way it should be done but it comes ~d to cougb uP extra money Uke that. The only consolation is that these guys are now paid-in-advance for next year .Anyway, the Sportsmen M.C. is one club that if you doD't want to abide by rules, don't go. You may get away with a sneaky but it's only because you were locky enough not to be noticed. One thing we beard that gave us a lift aDd made us feel that the District clubs will go on come bell or btgII water came trom lal1dng to Cbris Hytten. His club, the Lost Angels, have voted that none d. their members will slllPOri the unsaoctloDed events aDd ride only the Dtstrict races. Said Chris, "We decided, wily suppori an event by some guy wIlo III only in it for the money wilen our own clubs need all the snpport they can get. We'll suppori our own." Hurray for you Angels. ••. Pica Blvd., West Los AnQeles. Cal. Ascot Park in ~ California will once again be botb the bettlecround aDd launcblng pad for the btgII-f1Jinc mollocross motorcycles on Sunday, October 26th with the running of a twentytwo event card, offering the riders Il total purse of $1200. More than 200 eutries are expected as local racers cba1lenge some of tbe world's most experienced riderslDc1udIng Lars Larsson, European Champion from Sweden, Klyomaru Kato, from Japan aDd Eddie Mulder, Nattonal Champion, trom Burbank• Professional motorcross racing, a sport rapidly growing in popularity, was heretofore contested mostly in the dlstant bills, ravines and creeks of the back countryside. Motocrossers bave found a borne in midtown Gardena. A twisty, sUppery 7/8 mile obstacle course bas been constructed in, around, aver aDd through Ascot Park. Promoters Bob aDd Gary Bailey have designed the course so that all the'action is In full view of spectators in the grandstands. The brothers employed their thorolllth knowledge of the spori in. building a circuit loaded with deep ruts, chopped-uP logs, high-ramped jumps and quagmtry mudboles, worse than Napoleon faced at the Russian front. It was instant racetrack, aDd Instant success. More than two hundred combatants trom all areas of California, Nevada aDd Arizona filed their entries for the initial program. Already entered for the return bout which promises redbot action, is the swift, young man wIlo was the sensation of the first meeting: Blll SUvertborn trom San Diego. Among those expected to furnish SUverthorn with a rough way to go during the day-long events on the 26th, are two former champions of the sport: Lars Larsson trom Sweden aDd John DeSoto from Hawat1. Also ready to contest the outcome wilen the startiDg flag drops at 10: 00 a.m. will be Rich Thorwaidson, John Hateley, John Maynard aDd John Rice. All are SuPerior racers. As many as thirty-tive lightweight, bigb-powered motorcycle will be started In each moto, going 7/8 of a mUe on each lap.
