Not conten t with just one enduro -type machine, they've released a brand new bike called the Montadero. This bike is a trail version of the potent 360 of moto-cross racer. With a slight detuni ng of the engine, the additio n horn, and muffler, BULTACO has taken a beautif ul racing the lights, bike and made it into a very desirable trail/en duro motorc ycle ... So, all you Porsche and Ferrari owners, here's your type of machine. And yet, we're sure everyday peasants like ourselves can have our cake and eat it too. We might not be able to afford an exotic car but it would seem likely any BULTACO dealer would sell us the Monta dero . . ." NEW NEWS ENGINE 1 85 x 64 mm. Similar to a motocros but some lone stralchls let the fast bikes .tretch It out. rough Story and Photos by Mauree n Lee PERRIS, CALIF. , OCt. 19, 1969 - With a hand on the helmet start and a pair of blue b1kln1 panties sewed to the starting flag, the Powder Puff Associa tion released the riders from the starting line. Perris' s rough scramb les course was used with mass starts for each class with races lasting from 10 to 15 laps, No one complai ned about not enough track time and those who did ride got in some valuable practice for Corriga nville. The 50cc class was a gas, especia lly down in the gravel pit at one point. It was Novice Jack Danenburg (Yamah a) who was holding down a beautifu l lead when he fell off and Kurt Lewis took over the lead. Jack was pusbing his bike attempt ing to get it going in that rough section of the course and boPped on it Just as Haywar d Menden hall appeared and bam, Down they both went but both got going again. Lewis bad only half a lap to go when bis b1ke blew and there was Danenburg back in the lead as he bad passed Menden hall with Rocky Kavanaugh on a Suzuki coming in for the third. Wayne Wb1senaut (Yamah a) took the early lead in the 100 Novice followed by John Gallarz a (Kawas aki) and Bruce Ogilvie (Honda). Ogilvie really got with it and made bis way up into first spot but bad the bard luck to have his bike tie up three times moving b1m out of the running but a bit of shufflin g around bebind by the checker ed flag bad put • Gallarz a in the lead followed in by Wayne, and Bruce Ogilvie. One of the best races ot the day was between K & N Yamaha mounted Steve Nichols and Doug Mason on a Kawasa ki in the 100 Amateu r-Exper t go, Steve bad one heck of a time getting past the Amateur Mason, they were often shoulde r to shoulde r, but unfortun ately Mason suffered mechan ical problem s later on, Ron Powell (Kawas aki) came in for the second after an earlier battle with another "Green Streak" ridden by Richard Sweaney who came in fifth. ScoltSiV adge, again Kawasa ki took third with Troy McKee (Hodaka) a well-rid den fourth" The 125 Amateu r-Exper t bad Steve Nichols ta,Jdng bis second win of the day over John Rice (Sachs) and Steve Bast (Sachs). Al Baker (Yamaha) who should have been able to give the leaders a real run for their money bad the bad luck to have bis header come off, Ron Powell was the hero in the 250 Amateu r class building up a great lead off the line for a few laps and then was forced to drop out but Cralg Cove who started dead last off the line on bis Ossa was up into second place by the end of lap one and won over-ai l. Whee I Doug Mason (Kawas aki) took second and Karl WUson (Bultaco ) was third. The 250 Experts had a good one going. Larry Taylor (Bultaco ) took the lead with Danny Hodde (Ossa) bard after him. Laps progres sed and places changed with John Rice on the "World 'S Fastest Yamaha" owned by Sam Crooks moving up from a bad start, to pass Larry in the gravel pit and pull away. Hackie crashed with Al Baker while holding down second, moving Taylor up to finishin g in second and Dave Messer (Bultaco ) taking third. It was wild. Can you believe hacks on that course that goes over the mountai n? They did It, Ernie Aragon and John Deurne ier (Montes a) got a good lead with Meter and Meter (Greeve s) in secand, and taking over the lead on top of the mounta in. Coming down onto the regular part of the course the two actually. bumped and banged into each other but the Greeves had the edge and flnished first, In the 21" through Open Novice Ned Bixby (Montes a) took the lead with Boyd Mason (H-D) right on bis tail. Bixby put UP one heck of a scrap but by the end of the race it was Bob Greens treet on a Triump h who bad the lead. C-Z's Jim Stein literally blew otf the Amateu r class, and we suspect this was rather disturbi ng to the 40 inchers in the groupl Stein never backed off once and Just kept getting further and further ahead. Jim Peterso n and Jim Maupin both on Triump hs bad tun for a wb1le until Maupin 's bike packed it up, Jim Fox (Husky) bad second firmly in hand with Al Anders (Bultaco ) in third, Charee that CZ! Jimmy Stein hune It out and collected a win In the 500 Am./Ex.. Just like Stein, John Rice (Malco) did in the Expert class and did he ever, Tony Denius and Mike Bast aboard a Harley and a C- Z diced early on but Denius dropped back and Bast went on for a second. Jim Connoll y (Greeve s) worked from back a ways to third with Terry Dorsch (Triump h) behind bim. Terry hit a hole about lap one and bis handleb ars, except for the width became copies ot what you used in road races. Low down on the tank! Bryan Shannon (C- Z) started way back but worked up to chasing C.H. Wheat (Matco) around with Wheat trailing smoke from a blown seal. Talk about smogl They finished fifth and sixth.
