Hi-Jinx Move To New Course ... C\I By Shella Rlley hills made the 30 mile loop at A lot 01 dust" open trails combined with undwas hes Md rockJ marked and the checks were In the Buzurd' s Hare Scrambles a IGOd ane. The course was well JUlt the rllht spots. Pa tric k An ne xe s De ser t Win By Dick Wright Photos by JIm Perkins FOUR CORNERS, Cal., Oct. 19, 1969The Buzzard s M.C. did everyth ing just about perfect . The 30 mlle course. was well marked and the three checks in the field were just where they should have been. The rain dance that some of the riders did Saturday night in the pits didn't bring out any rain and since the desert is dry the race was very dusty. Sometim es the visibilit y was cut to less than twenty feet. There was a long line of riders ready to go at 10 a.m. The starting area was In a wide valley with some sushes and a lot of solft sand, but no deep gullles, so it was a fast and dusty go three miles out to the smoke bomb. After the banner dropped Steve Hollada y ~ the lead at the smoke bomb and Bob Raudman was right behind him. After the smoke the course ran through a wide valley with plenty of room to move out of the dust and on to an outside trail. About two ml1es out the riders came to a wide sandwash and the first check. After a left turn they went down the tive mUe fourth gear wash and back into the open boondocks. There were two rocQ hills. Not too bad howeve r, just enough to keeP riders on their toes. Two more checks, a mlle lone dry lake, and a lot of open dusty trails brought everyone back into the pits. The leaders were Mike Patrick on a Yamaha, Tom Schmid on a Bultaco running second and Bill Friant on a HusQ was third. The second loop was real choppy because all the riders had dug blg holes on the trail, but it wasn't quite as dusty because the riders were strung out and there were plenty of trails to branch out on. Patrick came in for the win with a good lead over second man Bill Friant who had passed Schmid t to take the second spot, Steve Kirk on a 500 Montesa moved up to third taking first 500cc class; Tom Schmid was next taking first 250 Amateu r, followed by Bill Bagner and Howard Utsey on a C-Z. Doyle Fields #9 was seventh on his Triump h, followed by Bruce Dunford on a HusQ. Don Reynold s was the first l25cc in on a Yamaha . to go all the way The lOOCc class and the leaders finished way up in the big blkes after starting fifteen minutes later. At the smoke the leader was Ken Buckspan followed by Jeff Wright, both on SS Hoda.kas tuned by Ron Benham. . Jack Morgan was third on his Hodaka; Wright took over the lead and held it for about twenty mUes, but had mechan ical trouble and dropped out. Buckspan took the lead again and came through the pits with about three minutes over Hodaka mounted Terry Clark. Buckspan held the lead on the second loop and came in for his first overall win, and running in the forties among the big bikes. Terry Clark was second and Jack Morgan was third. Mark Rader pulled in fourth. Before the race started the Buzzar d's decided to tear down a couple of the top lOOCc finiSher s, as there had been talk that some of the riders may have oversize engines . It was a good run and well manned by the Buzzard s. (Result s on page 20) RIVERS IDE, CALIF. , Oct. 19, '1969The ill-Jinx M.C. moved to a new course not far from the old site for this Sunday's race. Everyon e was surprise d, and some people (your reporte r Included) drove right past the new place thinking it must be some other group putting on a trials or someth ing. When we got to the old race course, we realized we had been tricked, so we all went back to investi~ gate that "other group" . The Hi-Jinx were amused at the strngtb of their fans' force of habit. The 100's tried the track out first, with spectac ular boo-boo S by many. Brian KIng and Bill Elwess ran the course like madmen playing tag, first '")ne then the other leading . Brian won the first moto but Bill came back In the second and led all the way until the last laP, when Brian was able to pass him. Brian also won the third moto and took first place in his class with Bill coming in second. Third place is very unoffici al, but I think Don Walllng sford won it. Walter Sl\arp and his Yamaha led the 125 class all the way, crossin g the finish line looking as serene as a little smiling sun. But the struggle for second and third was quite a racas. Dean York on his Sachs came from back around fifth place and gradual ly pushed up to second in the first moto. Mark Venaas took third. In the second mot<> Dean came from way back and couldn' t quite get by Mark. Robert Fortier on Sachs took second in the last moto, and put on a very good show indeed. He had d1ff1culties In the other motos and wasn't In content ion, howeve r. Second finally went to Dean York and third to' Mark Venaas. Gary Whitehead dominat ed an easily won the 250 class on his Yamaha. He did a wheelie wherev er and whenever possible for the amusem ent of the fans. Jim Johnson, also on a Yamaha, took second. Richard Wormin gton, again on a Yamaha, came in third in the first two motos but killed his engine going through the watercr ossing In the first lap of the last moto. Andy Jay, another man on a Yamaha, took third in the flast moto but that place wasn't enough to take third overall . Andy might have done better if it were not for his goggles. They were very dusty and foggy. In the last moto after crossin g up several times and nearly cleavIng a rock somewhat larger than both he and his bike, he finally took his goggles off and handed them to a flagman on the run. He was then able to see where he was going, which helps sometim es. The results given here are unoffici al because the club couldn' t get enough help from their membe rs. (Result s on page 20) was motocros s. The course was Brian Klnl spashes his Hodaka throulh the mud trap at the HI·Jlnks tal with Bill Elwus for a area but Brian adapted rllht awa, and after pla,lnl laid out In a new few laps won the lOOcc cia ...
