Hosaka was mounted on Pistone'S Triumph Metisse and although challenged at various times by Triumph mounted Earl Barker, was able to posta win.• Earl Barker put on a lead swapping contest with Hosaka but had to seWe for second slot. Triumph pilot John Hoy turned back Jim Harmon, Myron Carter and a host of other top fllght Experts to capture third. BSA mounted Russ Burch had a good afternoon in the Open Novice Series of motos. Hard pressed by Matchless rider Steve Sharp, who is one of the 1969 season's most improved young Novices, Burch captured wins In the first two motos with Sharp a close second. In the third moto It appeared to be a repeat performance, but Sharp had obivously PRE-DRILLED KNURLED EDGES found a way to go faster and was riding wheel to wheel with the leader. The pressure suddenly became too much [or Burch and he went over the ragged edge and dropped his scooter allowing Sharp to go on [or the third moto win. It didn't change the final outcome as Burch posted the most points and took first honors [or the class. Sharp, by viture of one win and two seconds was second and Honda mounted Don Seymour looked impressive In taking third In the hard ridden contest. First year Expert Sal Peluso, ridIng a Hodaka, led a talented group of 100cc Expert across the flnlsh line. A District 37 hot shoe, Gary Scott [rom Baldwin Park, came down to San Diego to show the local boys how to ride and he almost did It. He finished a close second. Carl Byers scampered across the flnlsh In third place. Hank Scott, on what has to be one of the hottest 125cc Yamaha sIngles In existence challenged the District 38 supremacy of Jim Chitwood on Don Vesco's 125cc Yamaha Twin and was out in front for awhlle, but as ChItwood got around hIm and tooli a good lead the twin went sour and Scott went on to win. In the final moto 12 year old Expert, Earl Roloff took the lead away from Scott on the first lap and although closely pressed won the moto. Final paInt standIngs gave Scott"flrst, Roloff second and Chitwood third. Powder Puff paint leader, Hodaka mounted Debbie Reon, continued her wInning ways, but was so closely challenged by Lori Fuller and her Kawasald that there was only two paInts spread between her and Debbie. Yam'llha pilot Shirley Newsom flnlshed third. As the 1969 season nears its end and the final poInt standIngs are fa1J1ng into position, the competition is getting tougher aod the races more exciting. Today's program was marred by several spills by overanxious racers. Luckily no one was seriously Injured. One that was amusIng even to those involved, occurred on the first lap of an Open Novice heat. Kawasald pilot Kenny James colllded with Wayne Butterfield. Butterfleld, a big, big man, hardiy felt the collision and continued on around the track with James' bike hooked to his. James who unloaded at the impact UpOn recoverIng, began searching for his scooter over the SOUth bank where he thought his mount had gone through the fence. Both riders were able to malce the restart. As usual, the Mesa M.C. put on a good TT show. The next Steeple Chase Program in the San Diego area w1ll be at the Dehesa Indian Reservation on Oct. 9th. District 37 riders are welcome to come down and participate and the San Diego boys will do anything to malce you haPPy except let you win. See you there.
