Oct. 12, 196~B1l1 Manley held a secure lead duriDg the begining laps of the AFM 2 hour producttion road race at Carlsbad SlD1dy, but an oil seal gave way and caused clutch slippage that allowed Jody Nicholas, astride a similar BSA Rocket Three to take over the race and with co-ridlng efforts from Mike Keen the pair went on to win. The 350 class bad several strong rlD1ners and Dave Allee with Rich Sheerer brought a Suzuki across for the class win. Steve McLaugblin was holdlng down second in the 350 class teaming with Rudy Galindo. In the flnallap Steve's American Eagle was being drafted by Ralph LeClerq on a 350 Honda. McLaughlln's b1ke suffered a Petite Mal seiZure and slowed suddenly forcing Ralph to dodge. The Honda did some motocross type gyrations KoYln Stafford and Ra, Vanderpool placod .ocond bohlnd Damron and Mazon In tho 200cc II Ihtwo I tht production class. until bike and rider were separated in a gully, The Honda was battered but Ralph was uninjured. The wheelle efforts of the Ray Vanderpool-Kevin St:a!ford Yamaha netted a win in the 250 division ahead of the Suzuki ridden by Bob Spier and Mike Fa1rf1eld. The Lightweight race went smoothly except for a slight altercation between Gary Scott on his C1m1attl and an unknown Yamaha. Neither rider was seriously injured but the Clm1attl was side1lned, The overall lightweight winners ;were Dave Damron and Jeff Mazon on a Suz. Tim Rockwood and Art Barda won the 175 class on a Yamaha, Because of a lack of entries the 125' s were combined with the 175's. Oct. 12, 1969 - Kawasaki really stole the show at Huntington Beach Sunday with Tim Beason capturing the 100 Novice 1st heat and Main Event followed by Kirk Re<;Iding's win in the combined 100 thru 175 Am.lExpert class. The second 100 Novice heat found Ed Newcomb and Mike Lund really diciDg it uP for second place with Mike coming out on top. The 125 Novice Matos were carbon copies with Gary W1ckam, Rex McLeod, and Ray Wunno taking the top three in that order. Bultaco was the password in the 175cc Novice class with four of them taking the top places. Doug Hannon, Mike Little, John Swinko, and Gary Wickam were aboard. You just wouldn't believe the steam that Kirk Redding cranked out of that Kawasald against the 175's. After Greg Wickam dumPed it in the north dog leg on the third lap of the first moto, Kirk bad complete control, copping all three wins. Dave MassiDgham took second place by 14 points over Tom Francisco. D.C. Ralph held off Mike Potter's strong fight in the first heat of 250. Novices only to have Mike come back in the Main to get revenge by holdlng the lead from wire to wire. 1bls left the semi winner, Jerry Formby settling for third place and Murray Smith in fourth. Henry Hornsveld bad to be hauled to the hospital with a possible broken ankle after losing it at the end of the straightaway in the second heat on the third laP. After a restart of that one, Larry StaPleton held the lead to the wire buthe bad to settle for a sixth in the Main. Tom White has that fast DT-L for sale and was try1Dg out a Bultaco today Ron RiDger bad a hard smack on the f~ce coming out of the sweeper into the straight when he went high to miss Mike Hannon layiDg on the track. Ron walked away but didn't feel UP to coming back for a third moto. Fred Wells (350 Honda) wrapPed-up two first and a second for an easy win. Andrew Acevedo captured an overall second with two seconds and a first. Larry StaPleton went into the tires in the north turn in the first molo of this 350-Open Novice event after w1nn1Dg his heat in the 250 class just two events before Don 'Haugh and Mike Chamberlain bad a stiff battle going after Mike overcame a bad start in the first molo and worked his way from sixth to second in 3-1/2 laps but could not get around Don. A good start in the second moto put Mike in front from wire to wire with Steve Eldredge locked Into second place. Don Haugh bad his turn at coming UP through the ranks from fifth to edge out Dave Lenar for third on the last laP. On the third moto Keith Potter on a Montesa grabbed the lead for two laps before Don and Mike could get around in that order. Don Haugh took an overall win on his BSA just 25 points ahead of Mike.
