- Full House At Sportsmen lM. C. Saddleback Scrambles "" CI) ~ 10:1 By Maureen Lee ~ ~ IRVINE, CA.,Oct. 12, 196~The Sportsmen chose Saddleback to throw thelr U scrambles at, and a good o~e It was. The :... track has been InProved by widening In U some sections and the surface held UP well In spite of the dry weather. The Saddleback Park crew headed UP by VIc WIlson had started working on it at five In the morning and continued to do so at dlfferent periods throughout the day. There were barely enough 50' s to make a class and as usual the Lewis family dominated the scene. Jay Lewis .(Yam) won with Honda rider Hank Scott getting second,- followed by two more Lewises, Larry and Kurt. The Powder Puff was a thriller. All the plates on the line were yellow except one, novice Debbie Sanders on her Kaw. Who won? Debbie and In no uncertain terms. On the flrst moto Sharon Wolf (Loblto) passed her and Debbie promptly got her back and for the next two motos wasn't seriously challenged. It was hard to tell whnse smile was bigger, hers or ber family's. It was an excellent ride. Craig Cove (Ossa) wearing a plume on his helmet like knights of old had a good day for himself by wInn1ng the 175-200 class and the 250 Amateur butreallyhad his hands full with Kawasaki - mounted Ron Powell In the 250, those Kawasakis are sUPer fast! Powell proved it again with an over-all win In the 100 Expert, beating out Scott Savadge on another "Green Streak" and Steve Nicolls (Yam). Bultaco and Larry Taylor won the f1rst 250 Expert moto but Larry dldn't fare quite so well In the next two. Steve Nicolls (Yam) had the lead for a-while butlt was Chuck Gann (Bul) going like Jack the Bear who won over-all. However, Larry silll has the lead In the point standings for that number one plate. For once even the big bikes couldn't complain about not having enough track time. Even if they dld have to start ridIng later than they gifured they st1ll got all the riding they could use. There were cUff-hangers In a couple of classes. In the 21"-500 motos It was Jim Stein on a CZ who won but Rick Marquis (Honda) gave him a real good go, expecially in the first moto. Bob Ward on a BSA-Rickman got second In the second round with Glenn Brunson (Bultaco) in second on the third and Marquis starting to trail. Once Stein got Into the lead there was just no catching him. The 500 Expert class once again provided the spectators with excellent action. Dw!gbt Harlow on a Beezer won theflrst round and It was neat to hear a fourstroke out in front again, with Jim Connolly (Greeves) In second. Second round was one of the races of the day when C.H. Wheat (Malco) took the lead with Harlow right on this tall and at times alongside, There was even a bit of contact between the twol But right at lIle end Connolly got between them. So going to the line for the third that meant that Jim could win if he could take that round and take It he did. Harlow had the bad luck to come UP with mechanical problems, and C.H. and the Malco didn't catch lIle Greeves. Chuck Wheat making his first ride as an Expert came UP with fourth behind Harlow's third. There was no doubt who was the fastest In the Qpen Novice class .Andy Hernandez (Norton) ran off and left 'em every moto. Wearing his Lost Angels colors he shot out into the lead leaving Mike Boyle (BSA) Herb Matbews (TriumPb) and Gary Garyson to settle out the other spots. Dirt Digger Ralph Porzelt was really making it for second spot In the second round when he aJ;ld another rider tangled handlebars and did he ever come a cropper! Practically dented the track not to mention his Triumph and that was that for the day for him. Fred Corley was the man in the Open Amateur but Perry Armstrong was the only rider we observed jumping his big Triumph downbill like a motocross racer! For a guy who muttered all morning that he didn't really want to ride, Steve Ellsworth really gave Terry Dorsch a handful to handle. In the three motos Steve was out front for a considerable portion of the time but every round It was Terry who'd nall him. Next week the scrambles move to Perris on the rough course. (Results on page 20) ~~~I.... "0 -,.. C.H. Wbeal, left, took second ahead of Owlcbl (10) Harlow wblle Jim Connolly (no1 sbown) was wlnnlne tbe 350·500 Expert moto. Craie Cove, 1571 wltb lbe plume on bls helmet, passed Ron (861) Powell and Cbe! (lUI) Burt to elve Ossa a win In the 250 Amateur moto. Cove also took ihe 175·200 molo. O'Neal Sweeps Fontana Motocross BY Terry Pratt FONTANA, CAL. October 4, 1969- Winning all of one's races at a motocross is an admlrable accomplishment and if It Is done In two classes it borders on the phenomenal. Jim 0' Neal won every time he lined UP and took away top money In both the 250 and Open classes at the CMC night motocross at Fontana. A $300 purse was offered to the Juniors and there were plenty of them on band to vie for the cash. Tim Hart, Bruce Baron and some of the other Seniors carne out but they had to run for fun because they didn't figure In the scoring or paying. The usual three motos were raced for each class. The Open class had only one divtsion and Jim O'Neal won all three motos on his C-Z SO he pocketed the bucks for that show. The big Incb class was by no means uncontested bowever. The 360 Malco ridden by Jerry Wllmon had Jim worldng for his wins and Jerry flnlsbed second for the evening abel(d of Greg Scbweers and Sam Jones. The 125 and 250 classes had too many riders to crowd onto the track at once so they were raced In two divisions and after the tabulation of the flrst three motos the seven top flnlsbers In each division were lined UP for a final event in thelr classes. _ 0' Neal had won all three of his 250 Division I motos and George Spellman was the. point leader going Into the final from 250 Division II. Jim clencbed the evening by winning the final and George took home second money to pay for Ossa parts. John Carmello and Larry Shaw were the 125 winners and after the final, John had the lion's share of both the points and the dollars. Larry was second and Glenn Lund who was second in Division II going Into the final, whiskered a plug and finished out of the money. Just to keep everyone on his toes from now on, the CMC organizers ran the course !lac kwards and that made It an all new ball game, folks. Although the distance around was the same, the lap times dropped considerably and the speeds between the corners was UP correspondingly. According to Jim 0' Neal all those left turns made It more like a TT scrambles and that snlted Jim just fkle since be said he used to ride a lot of those. A warm wind had hiown most of the day but the many thousands of gallons of water dumped on the track kept the vis1bWty up to an acceptable level. The next Fontana money race for Juniors Is November 1 and the Experts have thelr chance on October 26 when there will be trophies for Juniors as well. Hayward Season· Finale Foley Takes Overall BY W.H. Spencer HAYWARD, CAL. oct. 4, 1969 - With points races going down to the wire in several classes the Hayward M.C. presented the final points meet of the year at the Hayward Speedway. Season winners were named In all but one class and a run-off will break that tie. Next week the stands are expected to be filled as the fans watch the season end with a flourish and each class winner will receive his honors and the blgh point trophy. Jim Foley will get the big brass for the overall high point award. Jim had the crown sewn UP before the evening's races because he had such a large margin no one could catch him. Foley stretched his lead to 53 points with a second In the 250Cc Expert MaIn. Bruce Telxelra won that race In fine style leading from start to finish In another extremely exciting MaIn Event. Teixeira also stretched his 500cc Expert lead to 33 points over Jerry Cbadim. Telxelra's total 66 points in the two classes displays his fantastic abWty in the sportsmen category. Bruce will move to the 650Cc class next year. In the small bore classes, Mike Phillips switched or was switched to lOOCc Amateur class In this last race and won the MaIn. A win In a brand new class ls pretty amazing, but M1Jces' 28 points puts him th1rd In lOOCc Amateur standings while he was leading the 100Cc Novice. An untimely class change to say the least. A real battle In the huge 250cc Novice class was expected between Bob Doornbos and Mike Burleson, but Doornbos was a no show. The two were tied two Husqvarna-CZ-Penton weeks prior with 26 apiece but Burleson had fallen three points back to Doornbos. . When the main event lined UP Burleson needed a third to tie and a second to win. But Larry Neff's Ossa had other things in mind and went on to win. Bob Porter's Bultaco tried to get by but to no avail. Bill Bailey, on another Ossa, was th1rd and Burleson took a close fourth but suffered a one point deficit In the class standings. Randy Bailey won the 250Cc Amateur MaIn over a hard charging Bob Rickerts and in doing SO wrapped UP the class ahead of Ed Davis. Bailey crashed last week and was one point behind going Into tonight's action. In other 250cc Expertaction Mike Yarn returned to racing and placed fourth just in time for atrophy. Yarn st1ll has the great short track style that has made him such a great competitor. Since Foley has won the overall trophy he was not eligible for the class win, therefore reverting the trophy to second place finisher, Paul Johnson. The National #1 Sportsman rider is st1ll mendIng a broken leg but did such a fantastic job in the f1rst half of the season that his points carried bim through. The only tie of the year is In the 350Cc Novice class and a run-off will decide that. 'The 650Cc Expert MaIn was won by Phil Ray In a real thriller with Bill Budde and Bob Scally nipping at his wheels. Scally's th1rd place finish put him in a tie for second in the class with Joey lacoblttl. The point leader Tiffen Mullenax finished out of the money.
