~Mother On ~A Chopper ~ b" O!: ~ U >.. U By W.M. Askins Art by B.E.R. Service Mrs. Muise Spencer tl11s IIWI)' roles, amoag them tbat of secretary of the Los Borracbos Motorcycle Club of Ventura, CaJU. Her hlJSbBnd, DaD Speocer,· says of Marlene, "she is an excellent wUe, motber, and bomemaker". She bas a relfPODSible job as an insurance 1Ulderwriter with a brokerage firm, and she is an accompUshed motorcycle rider. It is DOt a case of a woman rldtng a motorcycle because her husbaDd does. She is a cycle rider per se, and there is a dUference. Marlene sits on a bike as 11 she belongs on. It; not as 11 she was afraid It was golng to move any minute. Many a male rider would tlnd It diftlcult to follow her Une over a curvy mountain road at blgh speed. Marlene can speak for herself. Th1s is what she bas to say about herself and the Los Borrachos M.C.: I have been riding for more than tltteen years. In the beglnn1ng, I attracted many stares as It wasn't as common then to see a woman rldtng her own bike. I have had my own customized 650 Trlumphfor over 7 years. b~ MRS, SPENCER I heInng to a motorcycle club of wblch I've become very proud - Los Borrachos M.C. The club held Its first meeting in December, 1966 with a beginning of 17 charter members. It orlginated because a few friends, my husband, and I were determined to prove It was possible to ride a "chopped" motorcycle without being an "outlaw". The theme behlnd the club was very popular. We now have over 40 members and probably some of the best looIdng blkes in the state. Our club requlres that a member must he 21, own a customized bike, and join the A.M.A. The club rides together very otten on many inner-club runs plus many gypsy tours, Hlgh Sierra Run, Pine Cone Run, etc. My husband, DaD, was President during the first year of the club, and I was Secretary- Treasurer. I have been Secretary ever since, altbough the duUes of Treasurer have been allocated to someone else due to the size of the club. Our members consist of outce workers, nurses, school teachers; beer truck driver, and many other types of employees. The Club contributes to various ciVic acUViUes such as local talr exhtbiUons during the year. We use a UW8 League Clubhouse for our meetings in exchange for the work that we contribute to the Little League. We also sponsor a needy fatherless tamUy each Christmas when we present the family with presents, a complete day's groceries, aloag with a tree and decoraUons. The above along with other events enabled the Los Borrachos M.C. to place 8th in the A.M.A. Ten Top Clubs of the U.S. In 1968. All this and we ride chopped bikes, wear black leather jackets, and are responsible citizens and parents who just enjoy the sport of motorcycling. KAWASAKI CASH Looking over the contingency casb awards for the Baja 1000 one must be impressed with Kawasaki's donation. Six thousand dollars ts on the block. Not only is it the hlghest amouilt but it bas the least conditions tied to It too. In fact there is onlY one - be riding a Kawasaki while setting fast time In either class or have fastest overall average. Such giants as the tire companies and spark plug people pale In comp;ll'tson. And this comes on the beels of Kawasaki's recent cash awards for Kawasaki dragsters. Bet there will be more than one "three" there this year. MORE BAJA It there are some of those three- cylinder bombs down there this year It could turn into a horsepower race, Uke with the cars. Husky are planning an entry of one of their double singles that won the 750 series In Europe. This is the pair of 360 barrels on a common crankcase that was developed last winter, only then it wasn't so big, this time It is to be the full. 75OCc. MORE CASH scheme that was reported recently In this column to get some American road racer s to England is looking more Ukely now. The bead of BMCRC, Jim Swift, has laid down plans for a team of Americans to compete In a series of match races at Brands Hatch and Mallory Park. A large purse is offered. The exact amount is yet to be determined but it should be bigger than anything In Europe. Castrol is the sponsor of the event and $2000 plus another $1000 for the best individual are the figures being ,considered. The challenge has been made through Harley Davidson and Triumpb here. The answer will be interesting as will the selection on who is to go and represent American road racing. A • -FIMAlIA CUS" Some important decisions may be made at the FIM Congress meeting this month In YugoslaVia. They could have far reaching effects on our sport here. On the agenda, for consideration, Is an appUcation for recognizing the AMA as the United States representative. A recent addition to the rule book makes it pOI;siple to throw out MlCUS 11 enough votes are cast In that direction. Whether this is good or bad depends ~~o~~urp:~~~y~~:iC~~e~S:= now that an interchange of riders trom various countries is a fact Instead of a goal. We will be hearing more about this In the near future. The congress meets during the week of October 11-18th. I urge everyone who is concerned about the future of the sport to take a position and get himself heard! WOTSISS 15 Take a look at the picture below and dust out the cobwebs.
