Bast U.S. Speedway ChaDlp By Mike Capallte Photo.by DeDD1s Greene COSTA MESA, OCtober 3 - Young Steve Bast again showed the Southern CalUornia Speedway fans that he still bad the zip that carried h1m to the CalUornia State Championship win last month at the L.A. Sports Arena•• Of a possible score of 15 points that Steve could have garnered throughout the evening, the young Van Nuys hotsboe was able to capture a total of 14. Making one of the best showings of his '69 season and going home with the second place trophy was John Carter who was rid1ng extremely well and was Steve's biggest threat the whole evening as be finished with 13 pothts lor his total. John was able to take the win in his first heat by staying ahead of Sonny Nutter who was only able to capture two wins, one second and two tb1rd. in his second go-around, he was matched against Rick Woods, Don Hawley and Stu Morley and John won tb1s one alter Woods lell. John's next heat put him against Steve and with both of them going in with two wins apiece, the tension was running high. Carter was all the line and away like a shot and Steve was hot on his rear wheel. J Steve Bast, center, grasps hands with Rick Woods. When they both accelerated lor the l1n1sh l1ne, it was Steve Bast tak1ng the win to the cheers of the capacity crowd. Steve Bast stretches out his lead in front of DeDD1s Gl1denhaus and John Ftshburn. Woods won the f1na1 race with a flawIess disPlay of speedway riding but was beaten by Steve Bast in the point tally. Class 1st Roland Pagan - Triumph Trident Open Production Class 1st Roland Pagan - Triumph Trident Carter was able to take his next heat win over Larry He1nselman. but on his last ride Eddie Mulder beat h1m all the l1ne and held the lead for the entire race giving John another second for a total of 13 points. One of Mulder'S wins was aga1nst Rick Woods who bad a hard time getting around DeDD1s GUdenhous and by the time he did, it was too late to catch Mulder as Rick went into the last race with a toa! of only eight points. With Steve Bast having 12 points going into the last race, there was no chance of Woods w1nnlng the ChamPionship as the best he would be able to do would be three points for the win• .
