COSTA MESA, OCtober 3 - Young Steve
Bast again showed the Southern CalUornia Speedway fans that he still bad the
zip that carried h1m to the CalUornia
State Championship win last month at the
L.A. Sports Arena••
Of a possible score of 15 points that
Steve could have garnered throughout
the evening, the young Van Nuys hotsboe
was able to capture a total of 14.
Making one of the best showings of his
'69 season and going home with the
second place trophy was John Carter who
was rid1ng extremely well and was
Steve's biggest threat the whole evening
as be finished with 13 pothts lor his
total. John was able to take the win in
his first heat by staying ahead of Sonny
Nutter who was only able to capture two
wins, one second and two tb1rd. in his
second go-around, he was matched
against Rick Woods, Don Hawley and Stu
Morley and John won tb1s one alter
Woods lell.
John's next heat put him against Steve
and with both of them going in with two
wins apiece, the tension was running
high. Carter was all the line and away
like a shot and Steve was hot on his rear
wheel.

Carter was able to take his next heat
win over Larry He1nselman. but on his
last ride Eddie Mulder beat h1m all the
l1ne and held the lead for the entire race
giving John another second for a total
of 13 points.
One of Mulder'S wins was aga1nst
Rick Woods who bad a hard time getting
around DeDD1s GUdenhous and by the time
he did, it was too late to catch Mulder
as Rick went into the last race with a
toa! of only eight points. With Steve Bast
having 12 points going into the last race,
there was no chance of Woods w1nnlng
the ChamPionship as the best he would
be able to do would be three points for
the win• .

going to be the best race of the evening
