The motorcycle plays a key role in
tile new ABC- TV bour long weekly ~
rna, , 'A Doctor Who Cares", wIl1ch made
its debut on Sept. 23, and wtll be shown
Tuesdays, 10:00-11':00 p.m. EDT.
Robert Young stars as Marcus Welby,
M.D., a general practitioner in Ibis era
of spec1a11zed medicine, with James
Brolin as Dr. Steve Kiley, a strongwtlled yoong associate.
Brolin ts not only a doctor, but also a
competent cyclist. '!be previews sbowed
bls riding ab1l1ty to be one of the dramatic b1gb11gbts of the program. Dasbtng
about as a dedicated famlly doctor who
"works twice as bard for balfas mucb" ,
Brolin makes house calls on bls motorcycle.
Executive Producer David Victor comments on the new show:
In tbls sbow a patient ts not just a
symptom, but a human being - otten a
friend. Welby's knowledge of a patient's
background, family and temperament
sometimes 1eads bim to act as psychologtst, father confessor, marrtage counselor, gadfly. He cares. Sometimes bls
approach ts unorthodox, sometimes
startling to his young associate, Dr.
Kiley.
•
Between the two doctors there (s, respect and llk1ng, but it's not a "Hey,you
were great in there, Chiefl" rel.atlooshiP. Conf11cts arise, and not only because of the generatlon gap, witll its
coosequeot differing mws of bebaY1or,
life styles, and morality. Dr. Kiley, a
very "now" young man wbo makes
bouse calls on a motorcycle, bas a mind
and directlon of bts own. He tends to
class general practitioners witll b1ghbutton shoes. He is worldDg witll Dr.
Welby for a year only becauSe he needs
the money to help a younger brother
tbrougb medical sebool. He then pJans
to resume bts tra1n1ng as a nenrologtst.
Welby and Kiley are surgeoas as well
as pbysicians, and some 01. our stortes
wtll be concerned with tile drama and
tension of the operating room. However,
"Marcus Welby, M.D." wiD escape the
l1m1tat1ons of hosPItal-based medical
series. Welby's practice takes him to
the mansions of tile rich, the neat, wellmortgaged bomes of the middle class,
tile pads of the hippies and the surlers,
tile back rooms of the forgotten. We will
use extensive location shooting in the
santa Monica area - the beaches, the
mountains, the picturesque adjo1n1ng
communities of Venice and Ma11bu.
James Brolin's role is that of a
stroag-willed, dedicated young doctor.
The qualities are evident In bts career
as an ac1or. Between roles in the past
eight years be bas put In over 5..0 00
bours of acfua1 class time studying with
soob noted drama coaches as Stella
Adler, Robert Gist, Vince Chase and
Robert Parts, and at the Film Industry
Workshop.
