Byers Big Winner At Southbay By Bill Harmer CHULA VISTA, CAL. Sept. 28, 1969- By winning the lOOCc EJePert, 250CC ~rt and the LucllY Yamaha Sweepstakes at the Mesa Motorcycle Club TT Scrambles, Carl Byers of San Diego collected the lion's share of honors here today. Although pres~ by Hodaka motmted Sal Peluso and Jim McGuire, Byers had very little difficulty 10 tooling his little Hodaka home first 10 all three motos of the lOOCc series. 10 the 250Cc event the story was a little dJfierent. Yamaha pilot, Dick Mills, threatened Byers who was 00 the Jon Knapp tuned LucllY Yamaha, to ltniSh a close secoDd 10 the first mota. Byers tangled with his team mate, Wayne Clarke 10 the second mota aDd alter sp1ll1ng, got up to ltniSh seventh wbile Mills was again captur1Dg second. In the l1nal moto, Byers l1n1sbed first aDd Mills took thlrd. The l1nal potut tally was Byers 871 aDd Mills 825 for the closest contest at the alternoon. Ya.ma.ba IDOID1ted Kevtn Sbttord was awarded thlrd. A vtsit1nc Dtstrlct 37 Triumph pilot, Terry Dorsch. of SlJI1l.aDd. Calil. who is well IaIown for his Adelanto COI1 battled It out wlth Russ Burch in the OPen Novice series at motos. In the l1nal mota with the toP potot honors ctepeDd1ng OIl the f1n1sh between Sbarp aDd Burch, Burch let the pressure of Sharp's close tatl1ng drive him over the ragged edge allow1ng Sbarp to go a.bead for the win. In the lOOCc Novice Main, Hodaka mOUllted Butch Montgomery led a talented group at Freshmen past the checkers. Young Jeff Hosaka rode impressively to the secODd spot a.bead at Ka wasa.1d mounted Jim Brockman. These boys are the ~rts of tomorrovandlthe way they rtde, they could place pretty high among Expert riders at today. Sammy Tanner, on a Royal Enfield 750 twin for the first time, was third with Shorty Seabourne 10 for fourth.
