Mert Lawwtll of San Francisco brought the #1 plate back to California after a long absence. Mert earned the national championship by finishing sixth. By main event time, the track bad become hard and stick, with the groove being on the pole i la San Jose. The grandstands that were fUled to near capacity were soon to see some great racing. In the Amateur Main, Don Castro took the lead at the first corner. Never being beaded, he went wire to wire for the big win. Aldana f1nIsbed second after recovering from a sloppy start. ThIrd went to Ken Pressgrove on his BSA, wblle Robin Martin on a Triumph received fourth. In the Expert MaIn, Jim Rice took the lead from the flag. Bart Markel and tIleD Larry Palmgren made several early challenges, but Rice withstood the pressure and pulled away. Palmgren and Markel bad a duel wbtcb ended w1tb Larry second and Bart third. On the eighteenth lap, Palmgren fell, In the same place as his brother had. Romero came on strong from a bad start to flntsb third in almost a dead beat with Mann., The day opened with Gene Romero setting a fast time of 25.00, and Don Castro setting fast Amateur time. The first Expert beat went to Romero with Lawwtll in second and Haaby in third. The second Expert beat prnvtded the first spW of the day. Cbuck Palmgren bad juSt taken the lead from Dick Mann in the fourth turn. In the south corner, Mann tried to get under Palmgren, and in doing so, knocked Palmgren dt. Mann went on to win over MarkelandRayborn. Palmgren wasn't hurt. The third beat went to Rice, who held off the cba1lenge of Larry Palmgren and Mark Brelsford for the fastest beat race et'the day. The first Amateur beat was taken by Don Castro who came from far back after a bad start to overtake Ken Presgrove. The second Amateur was a runaway win for Dave Aldana over Oklahoma's perennial Amateur, Danny Ware, and Charlle ChaPpel. The third Amateur beat went to Mike Mumford over GordonDusenberry and Robin Martin. The Expert Semi was taken by Al Vrlch (16J).
