Two Way Tie In CMC Series This San Dieean came north to ride In two classes. By John Shedd CARLSBAD, CAL., Sept. 21, 1969 - The third' race in the California Molo-Sport Club's new series Is now a thing of the past, and the series lead Is still a tie. Patrick John DeBenedettl and Bill Urban are tied for the point lead, and both are undefeated since the series began. With only three races to go in the series, there is a good chance that one of the two junior riders will win the grand prize, a nice, new, shiny Greeves Griffon. The CMC Is now paying money to the juilior classes. They feel that the Juniors are the real supporters of motocross, since they turn out for~aces In tremendous number's, and that they should get their share of that green stuff. At each event a different class of juniors will receive the caSh, and this week the loot went to the 500cc Junior class. The cash paying class will run three motos in each division, and the top riders In each will transfer to a fourth and flnal moto for a final point tally. This week's 110n's share of the priZe money went to one of the leaders in tl:e series point standings, P .J. DeBenedettl. He wheeled his Matco to four wins in the 500cc Junior class, and won the 250cc Junior class as well on an Ossa. No one seriously threatened DeBenedettl's lead in any moto, but J. 0' Neal finished second in his division and was DeBenedettl's closest competitor. F. McNabb brought his Victor in ahead of 0' Neal in the fourth moto to take second place money. The 500cc Senior class had a different winner in each moto, but Jim Wilson and his Greeves earned enough points to win the class. American Eagle sponsored two riders in this class, and both of them are from England. The Engllshmen, Dave Smith and Torn Leadbitter are here to get the feel of American motocross before the Inter-Am series starts in a few weeks. The pair will be riding American Eagles in the events. Jim Wilson had to corne from behind to take the lead from Klyornaru Kato and win the first 500cc moto, but Tim Bart and Montesa kept Jim back In second in the second leg. Dave Smith won the flnal leg on his Eagle, but he did not compete in the first moto so he had to settle for fifth overall while Wilson with one win and two seconds won the class. The first leg of the 250cc Senior class was newly made Senior, Jim West's, all the way, with veterans Bm Silverthorn and' Wilson fighting It out behind him for second and third. The second leg was Tim Bart's to the last laP, and then Wilson sl1pped by to win It. The best racing of the day came in the last laPs of the final 250cc SenIor class moto. West had moved his Yamaha into the lead on the first laP, but It wasn'tlongbefore Silverthorn had his Husky in strlktngdtstance. It was a reai test for the newly promoted Senior, West, and he passed It with flying colors. On the last laP Silverthorn Bill Silverthorn won tile 125ee Senior class. was never more than a bike lengtl1 beb1nd, and West kept him there to take tbe class win. Next week the fourth event of tbeCMC series will be held at Saddleback, and tbe money will be paid to the 250cc Juniors.
