r "Wild Bill" Cody Cops Fairground Win 'we',e I.,e• Parts - Service & Repair 41S1 Rlldondo Beach Blvd., Lawndale, Cal. (213) 542-4041 UWASAII By Mike Capallte Photos by Dennis Greene Headquarters BEACH CITIES CYCLES COSTA MESA, CAL., Sept. 19, 1969Bm Cody, the "Wlld Bm" hal! of the Cox and Son Racing Team, showed them the way around the oval Friday night to take a repeat of his win a few months ago in the Handicap Main Event. in the Scratch Main Event, it was Sonny Nutters' chance to make his tan club happy as they showed their suPPOrt by raising a huge banner saying 'GET IT ON SONNY' everytime Nutter came onto the track. . An interesting change on the agenda was the introduction of a doubles challenge match race whereby Rick Woods and Sonny Nutter were matched as a team against the Bast brothers, Mike and Steve. In the first of the two events, Rick and Sonny worked together perfectly as a team with Rick taking the lead and staying wide and Sonny right behind him and holding it close to the pole. This left Steve Bast, who was in third, no place to go as Woods and Nutter very efficiently kept him back in third with Mike in fourth. With points being given of 3-2-1-0 for f1n1shing positions, they went into the second match with Woods and Nutter holding a 5-1 lead. In the second match, it was Nutter who blasted into the lead but Mike Bast was right behiod him with Steve in third and Woods in fourth. Much to everyone's surprise, Mike moved uP and passed Sonny as Rick was trying to move uP ahead of Steve Bast. Suddenly, it happened. Steve went down in the corner and Rick Woods who was right behind 525 N. Mike went on to win the race under the red flag with Nutter second and Woods receiving third. This gave the Woods-Nutter combination a total of 8 points to the Bast brothers 4 . . The Handicap main was a Bm Cody victory all the way as he charged ahead of Jim Anderson right off the line and took the lead right from the start. Eddie Mulder, maIdng his first appearance here at the Fairgrounds track, moved uP past Anderson with Mike Bast and Rick Woods following him, but although Eddie worked his way right uP to Bill's rear wheel and stay.ed there and presseO CodY pretty hard, Bm kept his cool and kept the lead right down to the wire. Mulder took a second with Mike Bast third and Woods fourth. In the Scratch Main, Ron Miller grabbed the lead at the onset, but right behind him was Larry Heinselman with Sonny Nutter third and Mike Konle fourth. As Nutter tried to get around Heinselman, they were banging together rather hard and going rather fast and it had the crowd on its feet as Sonny finally pulled ahead of Heinselman and they both pulled under Miller as Ron went wide on one corner. With Nutter leading and Heinselman in second, Mike Konle moved around M1ller into third place and they f1n1shed in that order with Nutter holding off Heinselman's bid right down to the checkered flag.
