RIVERSIDE, CAL., Sept. 21, 1969 - The HI-JInx FMC, put on a rough motocross In the same location they have been using for a long time, but about half the course Is new and the other half is changed from last season. They really have laying out a course down to an art. In the 250 class Earl Roese1er and Gary WhItehead, both on Yamahas, had a close battle with the lead changing back and forth In all three motos. Gary did some spectacular wheelies down a stream bed, but Earl fInally won leaving Gary second and Frank Morrell on a Greaves third. Earl is Jim McClure's partner In the Baja race this year and he Is doing some fierce shaping uP for that first 500 miles. He pIcked the rIgbt race this week. The 125 class was completely dominated by Don Emier on his AmerIgan Eagle. ThIs young II!IlD (18 years old) has only been rIding about a year, but really looks smooth and polished In the rougb. He glided right by many oldtimers, completely In control. Art Feather took second In this series, followed by Dave Garber and Fred Cox, all three on Sacbs. The 100 class was total mayhem from begInning to end. There were many crashes and several inJurIes • Jim Salassl slid out In the sandwash with a rider rIght on his rear wheel. By the time he realized what had happened, the next rIder had run over JIm's ankle. JIm was taken to the hospItal and will be walking around with a cast for awhile. The club restarted this moto. Out of the first sIx fInIshers In the fIrst 100 moto, only two made It through the second and third motos and the rest of the class dIdn't fare much better. I guess the boys just couldn't believe their eyes when they saw the terrain the first time around. Don EIde, on a Hodaka, really bombed over. the obstacles In the first moto wInnIng It easily, but ran Into trouble In the second and third races. He had to settle tor second with Hayward Mendenhall, 8lso on a Hodaka, taking fir st honors, John Feather on his Sachs came In third, and Al Guman on a Suzukifourth. The HI-Jinx Club will have a trophy presentation for survivors tile first Thursday In October at tIleIr meeting house at 17108 Alfred In Cerritos, Cali!. The 100 riders who came out got tIleIr money's worth In off-cambers, rutted drop-offs, sleep climbs rising out of mushy sand, and a stream that was tile course for 100 slippery feet or so. incidentally, tile CIty of RiversIde is In the process of annexing this spot away from tile motocross fans, so if you've been thInking of making It to the HI-Jinx event, better make It soon.
