Manle, Wins For Norlon On Slippery Carlsbad Course Ron (97) Pierce leads Rudy Galindo in tile Open GP race. These two Yamahas were second and third behind that of Don Emde. . CARLSBAD, CAL. Sept. 21, 1969- Carlsbad Raceway was the focal point of a race packed Southern CalUornia weekend. While the CMC motocrossers churned up the dirt in the hiUs, the pavement set gathered at the road course for the AFM National Points Road Race. Both the production and GP classes were well represented with all the major brands in competition. All class events were double headers with the first race determining grid position for the final events. in the first event of the day, the Reynosa brothers found the only competition they had was young Pat Evans on his Hodaka which was. not fast enough Number 90, George Kerker pulls Bill Manley along. Later Manley did the pUlling and George took second place. Both are on Nortons. The hack crew was blamed for lubricating the first turn. to catch their Yamaha and ItaloJet.Rudy Galindo hit pay dirt twice. First when he won the 175cc Sr. race on his Yamaha and again when he finished third in the 350 Open class GP. As the day wore on, turn one was baptised In oil by the one and only side car during an exhibition. This free donatio!! of oil caused a 45 minute delay in the program while the pit stewards tried to sop it UP. When all agreed that they could again race, the flag waved UP for the next event, the 350-500 and Open. With a little slipping and sliding to add to the thrills, Commando mounted Bill Manley threw In some of his Ascot dirt track experience for a first place win. After the cloudburst Robert Whitlock dug his bike up from the heap and won his division of the 250 Juniors. Ron Matheny shoots off the bulldozed jump boflll'e onlookers In the grandstands. Sept. 21,1969Jerry Willmon nursed a broken rear wheel to a third moto Victory that made three in a row for Jerry's Malco in the Open Junior class at the Deadman's Point monthly motocross. John Morris, WOIl the other division of the Open Junior and his 250 division riding Huskies. The on-again off-again section through the mammoth sandstone rocks with its attendant profusion of tires and hay bales Ken Markling says to Ed Abbott: ·OK, that's the lillie one, hold on now for the big hill." Ed took second Open Junior behind John Morris. lengthened the course this time and the water hole was never quite splashed dry. A near record turn out of 141 riders came to Deadman's and a time or two it looked like they were allfaillng out of the sky at once. Somebody submarined the pack on the first jump of the 250 Division I race and one rider walked away under the care of the Rescue Three team. Following the restart, Robert WhiUock added up a first place winning total on his Yamaha. Dave Bro\1(ll raced his Yamaha to a second. After frustrating minor preparation. problems put the leader out of contention, Bob Martin clinched the win In the second divls.ion of the 250 race. Yamaha riders Ron Rakisits and Fred Kline were second and third. John Morris on a Husky and Dick Breker were first and second in the final 250 division while Dennis Pierce brought his Yamaha out of the desert to take third. In the Senior's race Ron Peterson put his American Eagle on top despite a hard luck seventh place finish in the third moto. George Spellman turned Ina4-4-2 effort to finish second. Ray McCarty came back to a motocross course to put on a display of silky style learned in four years on the European courses. Ray played out and was not a high finisher. As usual, some of the most actionpacked racing came in the 125 and under classes. In the first moto of the first half of the 100cc class John Gallarzaand Tom Horton swapPed the lead until Tom nerfed a lapPed rider and went down. John got that win for Ka w:isaki and Hodaka with Frank WUsford Sr. at the helm took the brass ili the second division. The finish was Yamaha-Penton In both the 125 divisions. DIrk Wambold and Jim Robinson were one- two In the first division and Ron Matheny and Gary Bevans fought it out In the second. (Results on page 20)
