Shamrocks M.C. Hare &Hound To Tom Poteet By Dick Wright CALIFORNIA CITY, CAL. Sept. 14,1969 - As usual, everyone makes the big Hare & Hounds and the Shamrocks M.C. always draws a big entry. This year there was a little added spice as the points standing in each class is st1ll wide open with Whitey Martino of the Checkers M.C. holding a sUm lead in the OPen class with Larry Bergquist of the Buzzards and Rick Shirey of the Antelope Ramblers M.C. closing in on him. Mike Patrick bas a good lead in the 250Cc class but Tom Poteet of the Rams M.C. is cbarging bard and still could catch him especially with his big win today. Jack Morgan of the Prospectors M.C. who bas held #1 in the 100Cc class for three years in a row is in the lead in the point standing but two young tigers are pushing him bard, Jeff Wright and Terry Clark both of the Antelope Rambers M.C. are close together and only about three hundred points behind the Champ. Also there is a very close race in the top desert club standing with the Checkers M.C. beingpushed by the Antelope Ramblers M.C. Now the stage is set for the battle to as Poteet put it, "That hill separated the racers from the Sunday riders". Poteet came into the finIsh after the second loop with a three minute lead on his 250cc Bultaco. Phil Bowers was second on a 250Cc Yamaha. Howard Utsey on a C.Z. was third taking first 500Cc class. Rick Shirey on a Bultaco increased his point standing by taking a fourth overall and second 500 Expert. Bruce Dunford was next in on his Husky, followed by the amazing Eric Jensen on a l25cc Sachs. Eric haQ a bard time with the big bikes on some of the long stralghtaways. Don Ross had to pick his Husky up after doing a good endo on the steep down b11l, but was st1ll able to take first 500 Amateur and ninth overall. Morris Norman was second Amateur on his Husky. Danny Kiedrowski on a 500 Husky, took first Novice in class. The heat of battle really turned this mUd mannered racer on. Tom Schmid took first 250 Amateur honors on his Husky. The 100Cc started a hal! hour after the big bikes. The leader at the second smoke bomb was Terry Clark on his Hodaka, Ken Buckspan was second on a SS Hodaka. Eric Jensen had his Sachs running third alter the Ilrst 01 two 45 mile loops. Bluer bikes out powered him on the last straights on the second loop and he took an admirable sllth at the finish. , ~ . . The desert brigade lorms up In front 01 miles and mll.s 01 nowhere land. start at 9:00 a.m. on the desert floor. After the banner dropPed young Tom Smith #933 on a Husky got a good trail in the thick bushy staring area and led the big pack of racer s at the second smoke bomb three mUes out; Larry Bergquist and Tom Poteet were right uP there. Poteet took over the lead two miles farther out on the trail in a wide canyon saDch,ash. Bergquist dropped in bebiDd him &Dd these two reallY ~ with it, leaYiDg the pack beII1nd. Poteet held the lead &Dd Berrquist fQuIed a plug, tweoty miles out &Dd dropped out of the race. Twenty mUes out and with a fortsecond lead Clark had to drop out with rear brake trouble, and Morgan took over the lead, and came into the pits first. Wes Anderson Jr. was second on his Harley Davdison. Morgan held the lead on the second loop and came in for the wiD. Allen P1pple worked his way uP to second spot on his Hodaka. Wes Anderson was third and John Coets was fourth on a sachs. Mark Wilson was the first Amaleur in on a Van Tech. Tom Brooks-.ook first Novice. on a Hodaka, Doug Sharp pulled in ninth &Dd was second Novice.
