it, right wbere Judy Judy And The Bears was maring lnstde. ~ Judy really jumped then, and let out a BY Darryl Skrabak Judy got stepped on by a bear In Colorado, wbtch is one of the hazards of going across the country on a motorcycle the way we are. Most Americans who travel and camp out don't face these hazards. They bring campers or trailers and at night, when the animals come out, they retreat into their insulated capsules and mIss all the fun. At this particular camp we bad been warned about the bears by another camP resident. So it was not entirely an unexPected surprise when Judy jumped awake in the little backpacking tent we use for shelter and said, "Eek, a bear!" While I was trying to adjust to this announcement and wake uP, Judy was yelling at the bear and reporting he was chewing on the suitcases we carry out stuff in. Here's Judy calmly munching her fingernails the morning after braving the bears. CI.> yell. Wowl There was the Co) bear, a big bear, a huge bear, ambling around the tent. I bad seen bigger bears maybe, In zoos, but I bad never seen such a big bear from six feet away. I began to get a little agitated at that point, and yelled at the bear to go away, which it did. Then Judy and I grabbed each other and proceeded to be scared together. It was hard to go to sleep after that, so Judy and I stayed awake listening to the bears raWe garbage cans. There were three of them, we learned later, and they bad a regular garbage can circuit in camp. But the big bear wasn't through with us yet. Sbe came back to our camp and began munching on our nice collapsible plastic water jug. It Is amazing bow silently these huge animals can move. Judy didn't hear the bear until it dragged the jug off the camp table. This time we both yelled at the bear. It resignedly put down the water jug and once more ambled away, this time tor good. I~~~~""""-""""-~~~~~~' Tile road to tile end of the world leads to barren Colorado. By the time I bad aroused myself enougb to look down at the foot of the tent where the suitcases were, Judy and her flashligbt !Jad driven the bear off. Having accomplished her brave works, Judy proceeded to be scared. I said don't worry, and went out and brought tile suitcases around to the head of the tent where we could guard them more closely. One of the suitcases had a hole from a bear bite. Grumbling about the hole, I went back to sleep. But Judy kept tossing around, worrying about bears. Now it happens that bears are curious animals, and during .,Judy's tosses a bear was standing outside the tent.
