Determination personified. Combo-Cross riders start to cut and slash just after the start. Oops! There wasn't a hole there after all. It's at U..s like this that all your past racing sins flash before your eyes. Inset: Some guys will do anything to win a trip to Vegas. Wilson Puts English Lessons To Test At Combo-Cross Photos and Story by Jerry Mills BAY MARE RANCH, CAL., Sept. 14, 1969 - Fresh from a racing trip in England, Jim WUson, riding variously sized Greeves, won two motos out of three in both the 250 and 500 Senior classes in the Combo-Cross at Bay Mare Ranch" Wbat is a Combo-Cross? Well, it is sometb1ng that tries to please everyone. It is one tbird each, TT, Motocross and Grand Prix. The Bay Mare course had lots at turns and strategically placed bumps and not one, but twofaststraightaways. OVerall the going was preliy fast and seemed to tan better into the 1'1' category than that of Motocross. JOOn DeSoto and Jobn Hateley headed Wilson in the tbird moto at the 500 Senior class so Jim agreed to a tbird. Bay Mare has a reputation for being dusty unless it is well prepared. On Sunday the course was chemically treated, which sound very mysterious but seemed to keep the dust under control. Another, more well known, chemical (H2O) was liberally applied to the surface and the resulting goo kept the dust down and many at the riders as well. It was not unusual to have halt the packfall down in the first few turns. There was such a good turn-out at riders that the organizers were forced to cut each moto from tlve laps to three. . However, tbis was not unW the first moto had -been run full-length. The hooligan for sixth place and back was dropped. The winners and front runners will be vacationing in Las Vegas on trip tickets altered as prizes for the races. We hope all that dust defying chemical washes alt before they walk into the lobby at the Stardust. A Triumph rid... and a IIalco ....n lIusb _-.. In U. powder OIl the Insld•. CMC Jrs. The 125 class was broken into two divisions and there were so many 2SOs they had to be raced in three d1v1sloos. After the results at three molDs were compiled the first six placers in each division at the 250 class moved to the 250 final. The 500 class had only one d1v1s1on so the cash winners here were determined by the usual three moto scoring system. It was a tight battle since Patrick John DeBenedett1, Ron Dugan and Jerry Willmoo each won one moto. Patrick John bad two strong seconds to back uP his tlrst place so be woo the big money. Roo Dugan was secood by virtue d. a 1-2-3 sbowtIlg for the Dfght, In the 125 final Bill Urban came out strong and took the lead. Urban led through the tlrst lap, and was finallY passed by Larry Sbaw in the second lap. By the tb1rd lap, the first four riders were separated from therestatthepack. They were Sbaw, Urban, Lund, and Kay KanaId. On the start at the last lap Shaw dumped and recovered going into turn 2, allowing Urban to get by him. The f1n1sb was UrtJan. Sbaw, Lund, KaDaId. Howwer, 011 the basis at points scored in all four races, Glen Lund started to make his Sacbs pay for itself by br1ng1ng bome top money. Larry Shaw got second money and Bll1 Urban was there for the sbow dough. SIeve Jackson was fourth. In the first lap at the 250 final Greg Schweers took a long lead. Al Wurtzel and Charles Esterl1nefoqghtover second place unW Al was able to pull away. Jim Fishback came uP from behind and sUpped past Charles into tbird place. Wurtzel screwed on the CZ and caught Schweers and after a tussle passed him. Coming out d. the final turn Wurtzel and Schweers were riding on the hairy edge but Greg bobbled and let Fishback by him. A seco:ld place in the Final clenched the top mooey spot for Jim F1shback. Al got second money and Charles was tbird with Bill George taking home the fourth place mooey. The competition was keen in each class and with so many riders present there was no chance lor cherry picking. The spectators seem to get the word about when there is going to be some good racing and they were out in force taking in the show from the Fontana grand- stands.
