He oaturally drove me aIf tile road aDd into tile dirt. I SlIlPOSe be lbougbt this was some sort of gag. The other problem that faces the motorcyclist is a more intricate one; one that requires some careful tbinIdng to find a solution. It is thatpeoplejustdon't see motorcycles. I tbink U's apsychological thing. It's as if the fellow riding the bike just wasn't on the same highway as the car. For example (and again this is trom personal experience) I've found myseH at a red light, walt1ng for it to change, so that I can move ahead. Across froin me are some cars ready to make a left. They will invariably inch their way in, letting other cars go by Wltu one lets them make their turn. If a bike is in tront, on the other hand, they'll justplow left, completely oblivious to the existence of the motorcycle, and its occ\lPal1t's own personal safety - or desires! I feel there bas to be a solution to this vehicular injustice. The nation bas to be made safe for the motorcyclist! As an intiaI step, I tbink cars should be provided with bumper stickers reading "THINK MOTORCYCLE". Perhaps this might have some sobering effects on other drivers and remind them that other types of movable transportation do exist. Secondly, maybe our driving tests can become more demandingandrestr1ctive. I tbink too many 1nd1viduals are driving who are simply Irresponsible and reckless (regardless of the vehicle). These types are dangerous enough for other cars, but what about to the persons riding the bikes who have absolutely notblng to protect them! Fmilly, I think the~neralaWmoo toward the motorcyclists themselves should change. The lal1acy that they are an inferior race, notfittosbarethesame crowded highways as the VW's have to be erradicated. Quite simply, the guy on the motor bike needs to be elevated to equal standing with other members ofbis community. Surely a society thatis sophisticated enough to go to the moon, can give the poor motorcycle THE RIGHT OF WAY. SO YOU WANT TO BE A MOTORCYCLE MECHANIC? Are you plann1ng to be a motorcycle wrench-twister? Do you dream of someday working on Mel Lacher or someboyd's hot :flat tracker at Ascot? An opportwlity to get started in this field is offered at Rio Hondo Jr. College in WhiWer, Cal. Dave Lamoureux will be the Instructor of a class in Small Engine Service, start1ng at the college September 11th. Dave works for Holman and Moody and brings fifteen years of ~ e on high performance engines to !be twentyweek course. "We've spent over a thousand doIIars on engines for students to tate apart and the facilities are fantastic.lknowanyOlie who comes out to look us over will be pleased. Motorcycle shops are hurt1ng for mechanics and this would be a flne way for a guy to ~t started in the business," Dave said. Late registration will be Sept.. 10 aDd 11th, 6 to 8:30 p.m. and tbere is a $3 fee. The class, 66A, will cover two aDdfourstroke engines, aDd will meet from 7-10 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. RIo Hondo Jr. College is located at 3600 Workman Mill Road in WhiWer, CalU. The telephone number is (213) 692-0921. MANN HEADS EARLY SACTO ENTRIES SACRAMENTO, CALIF. - One of Northern CalUornia's all- time motorcycle racing greats, Dick Mann of Richmond. heads a list of six early entries for J,e. Agajanian's eleventh annual AMA 25mile National Championship Motorcycle races at the old CalUornia State Falrgrounds in Sacramento on SWlclay afternoon, Sept. 14th at 2:30 p.m. Mann, the 1963 AMA Grand National champion rider, recenUy won his fifteenth and sixteenth national championship races of his career. The 35-yearold fulltime racer now ranks third behind Joe Leonard of San Jose and Bart Markel of Flint, Mich. in the amount of total national championship victories. He bas scored many of his wins on bts BSA, includlnghis T.T. victoryatPeorla, Ill. last month. Mann currenUy ranks seventh in AMA National point standlngs, and bas a good chance at taldng the tiUe once again. Mert Lawwlll of San Francisco currenUy leads the AMA point standings, in one of the closest races in years.
